Research Interests:

Maria has taught at Oxford University and joined the Department of East Asian Studies in 1992. Her research interests are social and cultural developments in modern and contemporary China. She has published Art and Politics in China, 1949-1984, and is joint author (with Dr Lin Min) of a book on the work of the contemporary writer, Xu Xing and most recently of a book on contemporary Chinese intellectual and cultural discourse.
