Research Interests:

My research interests are in the general area of language documentation and description in the Oceanic language family. Alongside this, I have developed an interest in linguistic typology, particularly the typology of TAM systems, anthropological linguistics, and ethno-botanical documentation.

I completed a descriptive grammar of the Neverver language of Malakula (Vanuatu) as my PhD Thesis. This project was funded by a Graduate Studentship awarded by The Hans Rausing Endangered Languages Project which is based at SOAS, University of London. The project was further supported by Merit award for Doctoral Study awarded by the New Zealand Federation of Graduate Women, Waikato Branch; and by a Contestable Research Grant, awarded by the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at the University of Waikato. The grammar will be published in the MGL series (Mouton de Gruyter) in 2012.

My current research project is an Exploration of Mood Systems in the Oceanic Languages of Vanuatu (2012-2014). This project was initially funded by a seed-funding grant from the University of Waikato research trust, and has now received a Marsden Fast Start grant from the Royal Society of New Zealand ($345,000). Dr Birgit Hellwig (La Trobe University, Melbourne, Australia) is the Associate Investigator for this project, and has an advisory role, along with Professor Ray Harlow.
