Research Interests:
Professor Daniel Zirker gained his BA and MA from the University of Montana, and a PhD in Political Science from the University of Alberta.
Previously, he served as the Dean of Arts and Sciences and Professor at Montana State University-Billings, and before that taught political science at the University of Idaho and Minnesota State University.
He was formerly the chair/president of the Research Committee on Armed Forces and Society of the International Political Science Association. A former U.S. Peace Corps volunteer in Northeast Brazil, he was a Fulbright senior lecturer at the University of Dar es Salaam.
He has published in academic journals on democratization, economic development and civil-military relations in Brazil as well as in Africa and Eastern Europe. He has co-edited two books (with Constantine Danopoulos) applying the lessons of the recent history of Latin America and Southern Europe to civil-military relations in Eastern Europe, the most recent of which is The Military and Society in the Former Eastern Bloc (Westview, 1999).
