Research Interests:

Priya Kurian has a BA in English literature from the University of Madras, an MA in Political Science and a PhD in Political Science from Purdue University. She taught at Purdue and the University of California, Santa Barbara before coming to Waikato.

A former journalist, she is the author of Engendering the Environment? Gender in the World Bank’s Environmental Policies (Ashgate, 2000) and the co-editor of International Organizations and Environmental Policy (Greenwood Press, 1995), Feminist Futures: Re-imagining Women, Culture and Development (Zed Books, 2003; Zubaan, 2006), and On the Edges of Development: Cultural Interventions (Routledge, 2009).

Her work has appeared in a number of journals including Futures, Cultural Politics, Policy & Politics, Ethnic and Racial Studies, Asian Journal of Public Administration, Feminist Media Studies, Public Relations Review, and The Environmental Professional.

Her research interests include environmental policy and politics; sustainable development; women, gender and development; public policy; race, gender and postcolonialism; science and technology politics; and media and politics.

Dr Kurian teaches POLS200 Politics and the Media, POLS318 Global Environmental Politics and Policy, and POLS537 Environmental Politics and Public Policy. She is also the Department's Graduate Adviser.
