Research Interests:

Jacques Poot is Professor of Population Economics, Population Studies Centre, University of Waikato, New Zealand. His university education was at VU University Amsterdam (Doctorandus, econometrics, 1978) and at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand (PhD, labour economics, 1984). He was previously Foreign Professor at the University of Tsukuba in Japan (1994-97 and 2002) and employed in various academic positions at Victoria University of Wellington between 1979 and 2003. He is an elected Corresponding Member (Honorary Fellow) of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences and is an adjunct professor in the Department of Spatial Economics at VU University Amsterdam. He is a member of the Board of Management of the Building Research Capability in the Social Sciences (BRCSS) network, a government-funded New Zealand-wide initiative to enhance capabilities in social science research. Professor Poot is an External Fellow of the Centre for Research and Analysis of Migration (CReAM) at University College London and an Affiliate of Motu Economic and Public Policy Research in Wellington. Professor Poot is also one of twelve Spinoza Commission members, who award the highest scientific prize across all disciplines in The Netherlands.

Professor Poot's research interests include all aspects of the economics of population (such as migration, fertility, labour force, and ageing) and especially the geographical dimension of these topics. He is currently objective leader of a large FRST-funded research programme focusing on the economic integration of immigrants in New Zealand. He has also carried out research projects in a wide range of other areas, such as: meta-analysis of non-experimental social science research; monopsony in local labour markets; the impact of geography on economic growth; regional development; globalization; innovation and efficiency in the New Zealand construction sector; transportation policy and the environment; housing markets; and forecasting. Professor Poot is a member of the editorial board of a number of international journals and was 1997-2006 Pacific Editor of Papers in Regional Science.
