Professor Darrin J Hodgetts

Research Interests:

Darrin’s research explores how people of lower socio-economic status (SES) use shared symbolic resources to construct their views on concerns such as social reform, homelessness, health professionals, men’s health, aging, lifestyle, unemployment, and men’s family violence.

His research draws on insights from social/societal/community psychology, media and communications, and medical sociology to analysis of the ways such social concerns are framed by mass media, the views voiced by individuals, and the ways in which these views are communally constructed communally.

Darrin has co-authored a number of peer refereed articles with national and international colleagues. Funding for these projects has come from the Health Research Council of New Zealand, Marsden, Santory and Toyota Centres for Economics and Related Disciplines, the British Academy, Canadian Health Research Council, The London School of Economics and Political Sciences, the University of Waikato, and Massey University.

Expertise:

Dr Hodgetts is a New Zealand educated social scientist with degrees from Massey University in Psychology and Media and Communications. Darrin adopts a community, critical and societal approach to psychology. He has held teaching appointments at Massey University and a post-doctoral fellowship in Community Helath in the Faculty of Medicine at Memorial University, Canada.

Prior to taking up his present position as a Senior Lecturer in Community Psychology, Darrin held a lectureship in Media and Communications within the Department of Social Psychology at the London School of Economics and Political Sciences, UK.
