Four GTEP Masters Students Win BRCSS Scholarships
The Department of Geography, Tourism and Environmental Planning is pleased to announce that four of its Masters students were awarded BRCSS Scholarships for 2008.
BRCSS is the acronym for Building Research Capability in the Social Sciences network, Hui Rangahau Tahi, a virtual research community which spans all New Zealand universities and the private-sector Family Centre Social Policy Research Unit. These agencies collaborate to build research capability in the social sciences sector through fostering innovative and new research, developing new and emerging researchers, and encouraging networking.
Of the thirteen 'Masters Research Awards' awarded in 2008, four went to students in the Department of Geography, Tourism and Environmental Planning at the University of Waikato. The four students and their research projects are:
Kathryn Carter - Restoring freshwater ecosystems and resurrecting indigenous lake biodiversity: Overcoming human behavioural barriers to successful 'pest' fish management
Joanna Lewin - Change a light bulb, save the planet? The politics of 'green consumerism' in New Zealand
Naomi Simmonds - Mana Wahine geography: Exploring the relationships between Maori women with Papatuanuku in contemporary Aotearoa
Cherie Todd - Women and gaming at home
Each BRCSS Masters Research Award provides $8000 towards the completion of graduate research.
