History is relevant to careers in
The media, education, policy analysis, business and administration, as well
as professional historical work.
Historical study emphasises such skills as formulating research questions, locating and critically analysing source materials, and effectively communicating the results of research. These skills are relevant to careers in the media, education, policy analysis, business and administration, as well as professional historical work.
Modern technology has not only created a contemporary 'information explosion', it has also made more widely available the residues of the distant past. There is an increasing demand for people with intellectual skills to make sense of the material which other human beings have left behind.
In New Zealand there is a growing 'public history' or 'applied history' movement, which employs historians outside academia to illuminate the development of businesses, institutions and issues. In large overseas societies the archives are massive, and historians who develop foreign language skills will have international opportunities.
"Look for opportunities to use your research and presentation skills while still at university. I got involved in voluntary research and have no doubt this was a huge help in getting my job. The extra work (so long as it doesn't negatively affect your study!) is well worth the effort. The research and varied presentation skills, are invaluable. Writing for publication, and the graduate conference gave me heaps of confidence in my ability, and it's something that impresses employers as well."
Jacqui Remnant (BA - History and English, Dip Teaching)
Current position: Private Secretary - Arts, Culture and Heritage Office of the Prime Minister |
"My graduate studies in History have given me skills and experience in research and writing, and allowed me to develop my communication skills and creative ability that has given me a number of exciting vocational experiences. I have worked with students at a graduate level at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Waikato, students at both a graduate and undergraduate level at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Victoria University. My Master's degree in History got me into the doors of Parliament where I have worked for the National spokesperson for Foreign Affairs and Defence, and now I am embarking on an entirely new adventure as a Media Developer for Career Services in the Ministry of Education. History - Taking You Places!"

"Having a background in history has given me the opportunity to work in a dynamic and challenging organisation, one which values the knowledge I bring to my role as much as the work I do with our archival and corporate records. My history degree has been invaluable in starting me on my path to a great career!"
Erica O'Flaherty (MA - History) Current position: Archives and Records Administrator - Auckland City Council
