Paper Profile

HIST260-10S (HAM)
Special Topic: Writing Historical Fiction

20 Points

Aim/Objectives

Taught by bestselling New Zealand author Deborah Challinor, this course offers an introduction to the popular genre of historical fiction. It employs the methodology of historical research and considers the challenges of integrating ‘fact’ with ‘fiction’ (and vice versa).

The course also examines how historical research relates to and can work profitably with the creative imagination. It analyses issues of narrative and style as well as attending to the contexts in which historical fiction is written. In sum, the course explores the main features of the genre and how and why fiction differs from non-fiction. It also offers the opportunity for students to develop historical research skills and how these skills can be practically applied, including discussion of the publishing industry and how to find a publisher.

The course involves a combination of lectures, class-based discussion, library research and informal writing. (Deborah Challinor PhD is the author of Tamar, White Feathers, Blue Smoke, Union Belle, Kitty, Fire, and the recently-published Amber.)
