Master of Arts (Applied) (MA(Applied))
The MA(Applied), a one-year, full-time programme, which can also be taken part-time or in distance/block [BLK] mode, is designed for students who wish to further their study of issues in second language teaching and Applied Linguistics. A limited number of papers are offered in NET (fully online) mode.
Distance/block [BLK] papers run over the full academic year, commencing in April and concluding at the end of Semester B. Attendance is required at one on-campus week per BLK paper. Dates for BLK courses will be advised. Assignments are spaced over the entire duration of these papers. NET papers are semesterised and are taught entirely online, with audio and text material support.
Admission and Programme Requirements:
To qualify for admission to the MA(Applied), candidates will normally hold a university degree or Diploma of Teaching, plus a Waikato PGDipSLT (or equivalent). Students generally need to achieve a B+ average in the Postgraduate Diploma (or equivalent) in order to proceed to the MA(Applied).
Students whose first language is not English must have an IELTS (Academic) score of 6.5 with no band lower than 6.0, or a TOEFL (paper-based) score of 600 including a Test of Written English of 5.
The programme comprises taught papers or equivalents amounting to 120 points. In addition to the core paper APPL501, students are required to take further papers equivalent to 90 points from those listed. With the approval of the Convenor of Applied Linguistics, students may take APPL591, APPL592 or APPL593 in lieu of taught papers. Students may apply to replace up to 3 papers (90 points) with a dissertation.
Students should note that the use of computers for communication may be an assessed component of both on-campus and distance/block papers.
