Student Profile

BAIYUE (BERRY) LIU
Support in ESLA within a BSocSc in Tourism Studies

B LiuHi, I am Baiyue (Berry) Liu and I have been studying ESLA as my supporting subject here at Waikato for two years and a half.

I have already taken ESLA101 "Academic Writing and Research" and ESLA102 "Academic Oral Presentation" during the first year of my university study.

At present, I am taking ESLA200 "Academic Written Discourse" and ESLA202 "Academic Oral Discourse" in order to complete ESLA as my supporting paper. I have found that the two level one ESLA papers help a lot. On one hand, APA referencing style is required for the entire academic written work, to that extent; ESLA101 provides a very sufficient coverage. On the other hand, ESLA102 assists me to become a confident presenter and well-organised speaker through the informative, interpretive, and persuasive type of oral presentation.

The ESLA papers have helped me to attain several A or even A+ on my essays for other papers, especially for level 2 and level 3 papers. That is to say, ESLA becomes more and more valuable when you take higher levels of papers. The reason is that level 2 and level 3 papers are exploring argumentative discourse from students. As long as you can comprehend the basic requirements for accomplishing academic work, you are more able to satisfy your readers by showing evidence that you are able to write concisely and persuasively on the themes set. Even though you do not discover obvious academic progress in your work in the in the short time, when you keep making an effort and take ESLA papers as your professional guideline, you will not be surprised in receiving remarkable achievements later on.

I am a tourism study student, and I am targeting at becoming a tourism agent manager or a hospitality director as my future career. I chose ESLA as my supporting subject for very objective and reasonable aspects. As tourism involves works that requires effective and efficient communication skills, wherever I go, I need to communicate with customers (with different ethnicities) by using English both orally and literally. To that extent, ESLA became my first choice to benefit my future development.

I am in the last year completing my undergraduate degree majoring in tourism. This year I have been recognized as an outstanding student in the Department of Geography and have been appointed as a tutor for TOST100. To be honest, this achievement can be attributed to the contribution of the ESLA papers. ESLA can not only prompt you to be prepared for university study in a direct way, but also can pave the way for you to succeed. Therefore, please take ESLA papers into your consideration when you are ready to get started.
