Student Profile

JINYE (KATHY) LI
Support in ESLA

J LiHi, I am Jinye (Kathy) Li and I have been studying ESLA as my supporting subject here at Waikato for two years. As an overseas student, English is my second language. It is very important and essential to gain good English understanding and skills.

ESLA courses provide many papers about writing skills and speaking skills. The most important reason that I enjoyed them that I have gained much knowledge and skills about writing essay and doing presentations, which are very helpful for me to study in here. Moreover, these skills and knowledge also help me to work with other people, like writing with group members and doing presentations with them. These courses also provide more chance for us to communicate with others and improve cooperation skills which I think are also helpful for my future working.

As we know, the teaching process in here at Waikato University is very different from Chinese universities. However, the ESLA courses help new international students to adapt to studying at Waikato University. For example, ESLA101 and ESLA200 teach us how to write formal essays and references for university assignments. Especially, ESLA101 not only teaches how to write essays, but also shows us how to read materials and helps us to understand readings. ESLA102 and ESLA202 teach us how to do presentations including general and academic, and these course also provide us a lot of chances to speak English formally and give us more confidence to speak in front of audiences. I am sure these skills and knowledge are necessary for every student studying in the university, because every paper needs us to write essays and do presentation. For example, I am studying HRM. Some papers need us to read a lot of materials and try to understand theories by ourselves. Therefore, ESLA101 and ESLA202 help me to understand readings such as labour studies, sociology and case studies in management. ESLA102 and ESLA202 help me study and work with other students together, especially local students, because we have a lot of assignments that need to be completed as a group, such as group essays and group presentations. Therefore, these skills and knowledge are very helpful and useful for every course at university.

For my future career, I hope I will be a manager in a company. A manager not only needs to communicate with other colleagues, but also needs to do written work. Although I am not working in this area now, but I am sure these skills and knowledge from these courses will be helpful and useful in my future career. Every student hopes to have a good job and do it well in the future. So, just before working, you need a lot of skills and experiences. So, all I want to say, is that the ESLA papers are a wise study choice here at Waikato University.
