Waikato Summer School for the Arts
MUSI100-10S Materials of Music
This Summer School course is intended for people who have a strong interest in music but who, for one reason or another, have not yet mastered its technical aspects. MUSI100 offers students an opportunity to learn the basics of music theory and musical technical skills completely from scratch in a friendly, supportive teaching environment.
An experienced teacher will lead students through the learning process in a clear, step-by-step progression, with plenty of helpful exercises and opportunities to ask questions.
No previous musical knowledge is expected: you will be taught everything necessary from the very beginning. By the end of the course students should feel comfortable reading and writing music to a modest level, and have an understanding of how harmony (more than one note played at the same time) and counterpoint (two or more tunes played together in a harmonious way) work.
The related skills of ear training and basic keyboard from score playing will be taught at the same time, forming a package of interrelated musical skills.
Students who successfully complete the course will be equipped to begin music studies at the University, including the BMus (academic) degree.
Please feel welcome to contact us with any questions about the course.
