Andrew Uren
Clarinet Teacher

Andrew is dedicated to promoting New Zealand music and the Bass Clarinet. He is a founding member of the contemporary ensemble 175 East which was awarded the 2003 Citation for Services to New Zealand Music. www.175East.co.nz He has given Australasian premieres of works by John Cage, Elliott Carter, James Dillon, Morton Feldman, Brian Ferneyhough, Michael Finnissy, Christopher Fox, Sofia Gubaidulina, Mauicio Kagel, Liza Lim, Olga Neuwirth, Kaija Saaiaho, Giacinto Scelsi, Iannis Xenaki and Frank Zappa and has commissioned and premiered New Zealand works by Helen Bowater, Phil Brownlee, Rachel Clement, Chris Cree Brown, Lyell Cresswell, Phil Dadson, James Gardner, Neville Hall, Dylan Lardelli, Lissa Meridan, Micahel Norris, John Psathas, John Rimmer, John Elmsly, and Chris Watson. Andrew has performed at six of the past Nelson Young Composer Workshops. Andrew recently gained a Diploma of Education. He tutors clarinet at the University Of Auckland and seven Auckland schools and is involved in directing various groups as well as workshops and masterclasses. In 2006, Andrew taught at St Cuthbert’s College in Auckland. Andrew has performed with Australia’s premiere contemporary ensemble, Elision. He is theNew Zealand Representative of the International Clarinet Society and recently founded the New Zealand Clarinet Society. www.nzclarinetsociety.org.nz Andrew has performed on Clarinet and Bass Clarinet in the Auckland Philharmonia, New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, Christchurch Symphony Orchestra and the Auckland Chamber Orchestra. Andrew represented New Zealand in a solo recital of New Zealand music at the Inaugural Bass Clarinet Convention in Rotterdam. Andrew studied with Peter Scholes in Auckland and Harry Sparnaay at the Sweelinck Conservatorium, Amsterdam where he completed his Uitvoerend Musicus. In 2007 he is performing with his piano trio.
