The Big Questions: An Introduction to Philosophy
15 Points
Aim/Objectives
This paper will give students a taste of what Philosophy is all about, by exploring Big Questions in Theory of Knowledge, Philosophy of Mind, Aesthetics and Ethics, while introducing you to the ideas of some great philosophers. At times you will find that philosophy leaves you puzzled. This is part of the process of doing philosophy. Philosophers raise questions that seem simple or even childish, for instance, ‘What is the mind?’, ‘Do miracles exist?’, and ‘What is art?’, but when we try to answer these questions we find that scientific methods don’t get us very far at all. In order to start doing philosophy you need to appreciate these problems and their puzzling nature. This paper will help you understand the various attempts at solving them employed by famous philosophers and take a first step towards arriving at your own solution. Many people find the process of questioning their most deeply-held assumptions to be a unique intellectual adventure.
Strongly recommended if students are majoring in Philosophy.
