Roundtable with visiting Indian MP

Roundtable MembersAs a member of the New Zealand delegation to the inaugural India-New Zealand Dialogue held in New Delhi in December last year, and an expert on our relations with Asia, Dr. Mark G. Rolls was invited to participate in a roundtable with the high-profile visiting Indian MP, Mr Rahul Gandhi.  Mr Gandhi comes from an illustrious political family and is widely viewed as a prospective prime minister.  The roundtable was held at the Asia New Zealand Foundation office in Wellington on 16 February with discussion topics including the way in which India is perceived in New Zealand and the place of Indian migrants in New Zealand society.  Mr Gandhi (seventh from the left) was visiting New Zealand as the Sir Edmund Hillary Fellow.  Dr. Rolls is currently working on a book on New Zealand's relations with South Asia.

Marsden Success - Technology and Sustainable Citizenship

Associate Professor Priya KurianAssociate Professors Priya Kurian (Political Science and Public Policy) and Debashish Munshi (Management Communication) from Waikato University have received a Marsden grant of $560,000 to find some common ground amongst groups who support and oppose new technologies such as nanotechnology and transgenics. They propose finding common ground amongst the different and often antagonistic groups and from there work on a policy design for these new technologies.

The Shangri-La Dialogue

Dr Mark Rolls at the Shangri-La DialogueDr. Mark G. Rolls, Senior Lecturer in Asian Politics and Security and Co-Director IRSSt Programme, was a delegate to the 8th IISS Asia Security Summit - better known as the Shangri-La Dialogue.  The Dialogue was held in Singapore from 29-31 May.  He heard a keynote speech by the Australian PM, Kevin Rudd, in which Rudd renewed his call for an Asia-Pacific Community, and US Secretary of Defence Robert Gates's address to the first plenary session in which North Korea's recent nuclear test was strongly condemned.  Dr. Rolls participated in the Maritime Co-operation and Confidence-Building Break Out group.   His personal commentary on the Dialogue will eventually be published on the Asia: NZ Foundation webpage.
