Public Policy - Graduate Study

A range of graduate qualifications in Public Policy are available. Programmes include both broad-based papers as well as papers in such specialist policy areas as defence, environment, and social policy.

We are fortunate in being able to provide our graduate students with access to many resources, including study rooms and computer facilities. Many graduate students, particularly those working for doctorates, are employed as tutors on undergraduate papers - thereby building up valuable teaching experience.

Graduate Certificate (GradCert(PP))
Graduate Diploma (GradDip(PP))
Bachelor of Social Sciences with Honours (BSocSc(Hons))
Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert(PP))

BSocSc(Hons) in Public Policy

Regulations

To be considered for enrolment in graduate Public Policy papers, a student should normally have at least a B average in either the best three of their 300 Level Political Science papers or all their undergraduate Political Science papers.

To complete the BSocSc(Hons) students must gain 120 points at 500 Level, including the compulsory paper listed below, and a further 30 points from the papers listed for the subject.

Compulsory for the BSocSc(Hons):
     POLS501 The Policy Process and Policy Analysis: Theoretical
                    Perspectives
     POLS531 Issues in Public Policy and Administration

MSocSc in Public Policy

Regulations

To complete the MSocSc in Public Policy students must take either a 120 point thesis, a 90 point thesis and 30 points from approved 500 Level papers, or a 60 point dissertation and 60 points in approved 500 Level papers.

Higher Degrees

There are two research degrees examined entirely by thesis: the MPhil and the PhD. For full-time students the MPhil is expected to be completed in one year, the PhD in three years. Normally, an honours degree with first or upper second class honours is a prerequisite for enrolment in an MPhil. Students normally enrol for a PhD only after completing an MA or MSocSc, but in some cases an MPhil may be converted to a PhD. Anyone interested in undertaking an MPhil or PhD programme must discuss their plans with the Graduate Adviser.
