Filial piety at a distance: older Chinese immigrants ageing in place
I will be exploring elderly Chinese immigrants' views of filial piety and their housing experiences in a western society. In traditional Chinese culture, filial piety refers to the tradition of looking after and giving respect and care to one's parents in their old age. I plan to talk to 30 elderly Chinese new immigrants to find out more about the meaning of home, how their experiences and expectations of filial piety have changed in the course of acculturation, and what resources are required to assist Chinese older people to age in place and to make an ongoing contribution to their families and communities.
