Gender, Policy and Development
15 Points
Aim/Objectives
This new graduate half paper forms part of the compulsory core of taught papers for the BSocSc(Hons) in Women's and Gender Studies. Its content responds to recent policy shifts at both national and international levels that have underscored the central importance of gender to regional and national development, along with the need for high-level gender analysis of a wide range of related policy initiatives.
The purpose of this paper is to facilitate students' understandings of, and critical reflections on, policy and practice relevant to gender and development, and to simultaneously enhance their skills in research and gender analysis. It engages with key debates in the emerging field of Gender and Development Studies, and explores strategies for, and constraints on, the implementation of gender-sensitive approaches to development policy. The paper also examines the roles of various agents in the development process, including individual women and men, women's groups, NGOs, government organizations, and international development organizations.
