Sociology - Expectations and Further Information
In the paper descriptions in this site, we have tried to provide you with as full information as possible as to what you can expect from different papers. Staff are available for further consultations, and to assist you with resolving problems.
But we also have certain expectations of you! Learning is not a passive exercise: students as well as staff must contribute to it. Attendance at tutorials is compulsory, and our tutorial system requires that you do the preparatory reading, in order to benefit from the tutorial discussions. Tutorials are not only the place where you can resolve problems you have encountered. They are also an important training ground to build your skills and confidence in presenting ideas verbally. And the work done in tutorials, like lecture material, is examinable in those papers for which formal examinations are held.
We also expect that you will submit work by the deadline specified. All assignments other than class tests must be handed in through the Faculty Information Centre in JG.16 for recording on a class list as received. You are advised to keep a copy of work submitted.
Academic Advisers
All students are encouraged to seek advice from their lecturers and course convenors.
Finding Out What? When? Where? Who?
The Calendar is the basic source of rules and regulations; this site simply gives a guide to planning courses in the Programme, and it is not intended to replace the Calendar.
Course Outlines may be available for some papers before enrolment in October. Copies of course outlines are held in the Faculty Information Centre in JG.16 but in case of difficulty the Programme administrarors (Bev Campbell, K2.27 / Janice Smith, K2.01) may be able to help. Please state the paper codes and/or titles required. Staff are also happy to see prospective students. If you are making a special trip to campus, we suggest you telephone (07) 838 4138 and ask for the staff member concerned. Please note that in January, most staff are on annual leave.
