This page lists Prizes 0000 currently offered by the University of Waikato. The Prizes are listed alphabetically by Department, in Faculty/School order. There is also an ‘Other’ category below for University-wide Prizes.

 

We would like to acknowledge the generosity of the Prize sponsors. Prizes offer both practical support and valuable encouragement to the recipients.

 

Please note that there is no application process for these Prizes. They are awarded by the University according to the individual Prize regulations.

ANTHROPOLOGY

The Anthropology Prize

The Anthropology Prize is awarded to the student who achieves the best overall grades in at least two third-year anthropology papers in a given year.

The Prize was established in 2008 by a former student of the Anthropology Department at the University of Waikato.
 

English

Arthur Sewell Prize in English

The Arthur Sewell Prize in English is awarded in alternate years for the most outstanding work done during the year in the fields of Shakespeare or Milton Studies.

The Prize commemorates the Foundation Professors of English in the University of Waikato and the University of Auckland. It was set up by friends and students from both Universities.

AUP Prize for Excellence in First Year Graduate English

The AUP (Auckland University Press) Prize for Excellence in First Year Graduate English is awarded annually to a student taking English for the degree of Bachelor of Arts with Honours.

Blackwood Paul Memorial Prize

The Blackwood Paul Memorial Prize is awarded to the top student majoring in English Studies in the course NZST300 (Writing Identity).

Doris Henry English Speaking Union Award

The Doris Henry English Speaking Union Award is awarded annually on the basis of academic merit to a full- or part-time undergraduate student who has completed at least three Level II courses in English.

The Prize was established to mark the contribution of Mrs Doris Henry towards the English Speaking Union in New Zealand.

Waikato Branch NZFGW Elizabeth Bisley Memorial Prize in English

The Waikato Branch NZFGW Elizabeth Bisley Memorial Prize in English is awarded annually to a student taking English for the degree of Master of Arts.

The Prize was established in 1964 from a fund set up for the purpose by the Waikato Branch of the New Zealand Federation of Graduate Women.

 

French

European Union Prize in European Languages

The European Union Prize in European Languages is awarded annually to undergraduate students of French, German, or Spanish, studying at any level, who have shown outstanding achievement in their area of studies.

The Prize is sponsored by the Delegation of the European Commission to New Zealand.

Marshall Prize for French Literature

The Marshall Prize for French Literature marks excellence in the study of French Literature. The successful student will normally be enrolled in a course in French Literature from the second year level, or above.

The Prize was established in 1994 from a fund granted for the purpose by Professor Fred and Mrs Jocelyn Marshall.

 

Geography, Tourism and Environmental Studies

Kathrine M. Bell Memorial Prize in Geography

The Kathrine M. Bell Memorial Prize in Geography is awarded annually to a candidate taking Geography as a main subject for a degree.

The Prize was established by Mrs Kathrine M. Bell MBE JP MA Glas DipEd Camb.

NZPI (Waikato Branch) Outstanding Planning Student Prize

The NZPI (Waikato Branch) Outstanding Planning Student Prize is awarded annually to an outstanding student who is enrolled at the University of Waikato and studying to be a planner.

The Prize is sponsored by the New Zealand Planning Institute (Waikato Branch).

Calder and Lawson House of Travel Outstanding Tourism Studies Award

The Calder and Lawson House of Travel Outstanding Tourism Studies Award is awarded annually to a student who has been studying Tourism Studies or TRIP and enrolled in Level II, III or IV papers in the year of award.

The Prize was established by Calder and Lawson House of Travel [now known as Orbit Corporate Travel].

 

German

European Union Prize in European Languages

The European Union Prize in European Languages is awarded annually to undergraduate students of French, German, or Spanish, studying at any level, who have shown outstanding achievement in their area of studies.

The Prize is sponsored by the Delegation of the European Commission to New Zealand.

Goethe Society Prize for Excellence in German

The Goethe Society Prize for Excellence in German (Beginners and Intermediate) is awarded annually to the most meritorious students.

The Prize was established by the Waikato branch of the Goethe Society, a literary and cultural society, which promotes the German language and culture.

 

General and Applied Linguistics

English Speaking Union Prize

The English Speaking Union Prize is awarded to the best student of the year who has completed the PGDipSLT and is enrolling for the MA (Applied).

The Prize was established in 2004 by the Tauranga branch of the English Speaking Union (ESU) to encourage global understanding and to create friendships through the universal use of the English language.

 

History

Margaret Avery Memorial Prize in History

The Margaret Avery Memorial Prize in History is granted annually on the basis of academic merit and is intended to provide financial assistance to a mature woman, majoring in History.

The award was established by Margaret’s colleagues at the time of her retirement from active teaching in the History Department in acknowledgement of her contributions as teacher, colleague, mentor and friend.

Selwyn Prize in History / Mo te Hirangi i Roto i Te Tari Tumu Kōrero

The Selwyn Prize in History / Mo te Hirangi i Roto I Te Tari Tumu Kōrero Prize is awarded to a top student at undergraduate level, majoring in History.

The Prize, established in 1997, was set up with a bequest to the University from David Hackett Fischer to enable an annual Prize to be awarded to History students.

 

Music

Bethan Valmai Adams Award

The Bethan Valmai Adams Award is awarded annually to the winner of the annual University of Waikato Aria Competition.

The Award was established in first awarded in 2008.

John Mansfield Thomson Prize in Music History

The John Mansfield Thomson Prize in Music History is awarded annually to the student who has written the most outstanding essay on a music history topic as part of enrolled studies in the Music Department that year.

John Mansfield Thomson (1926-99) was New Zealand’s most eminent music historian. From 1998, until his death in September of 1999, he was the inaugural Research Associate in the University of Waikato Music Department.

Lili Kraus Piano Award

The Lili Kraus Piano Award is conferred annually to a full-time BMus, BMus(Hons) or MMus student of piano at the University of Waikato who demonstrates outstanding commitment and artistic progress in piano studies.

The Award was established in 2000 to commemorate the life of Ms Lili Kraus and to assist young people with ability who are studying music.

Niklas Werner Memorial Prize

The Niklas Werner Memorial Prize is awarded annually to a graduate or postgraduate student enrolled in the Music Department at the University of Waikato for outstanding academic work in composition or research.

The Prize was established in 2005 by the Werner family (Berlin, Germany) and the Music Department in memory of PhD student Niklas Werner (1976-2005), who passed away on Mt Aspiring in January 2005.

Norah Howell Music Award

The Norah Howell Music Award is presented annually to two gifted students in Music Performance at the University of Waikato.

The Award was established in 1989 with the aim of serving to retain such students, and to encourage and enhance an artistic focus for the campus as a whole.

 

Philosophy

Philosophy Graduate Essay Prize

The Philosophy Graduate Essay Prize is awarded annually to the student who has submitted the best essay for a taught graduate-level Philosophy paper and has received an ‘A+’ grade for that essay.

The Prize was established in 2007 by the University of Waikato Philosophy programme.

Prior Society Prize in Philosophy

The Prior Society Prize in Philosophy is awarded annually to a student who, in the year of the award, has taken Level III courses in Philosophy as a major subject for a first degree.

The Prize was established in 1981 by Ailsa M Snow BA.

Rudi Ziedins Prize in Philosophy

The Rudi Ziedins Prize in Philosophy is awarded annually to the most outstanding student taking two or more courses in Philosophy at either Level I or II, in the year of the award. Rudi Ziedins was Professor of Philosophy from 1969 to 1990.

The Prize was established in 1989 by colleagues and friends of Rudi Ziedins.

 

Political Science and Public Policy

Lewis Fretz Prize in International Relations

The Lewis Fretz Prize in International Relations is awarded annually to a student who has successfully completed at least one year’s undergraduate study towards a degree at the University of Waikato, and has passed a first-year paper or papers in the subject area of International Relations, with at least an ‘A’ grade.

This Prize was established in 2004 to recognise the contribution to the University of Waikato and the wider community of Dr Lewis Fretz, who died in 1999. Dr Fretz was a popular lecturer in international relations, who was highly regarded both by students at the University and the audiences of public lectures he gave in the Waikato – Bay of Plenty region.

Theo Roy Prize in Politics

The Theo Roy Prize in Politics is awarded to the most meritorious student majoring in Politics and Public Policy. The successful student must have completed two years of full-time study.

This Prize was established in 1988 from a fund donated by colleagues, students and friends of Emeritus Professor W T Roy.

 

SPANISH

European Union Prize in European Languages

The European Union Prize in European Languages is awarded annually to undergraduate students of French, German, or Spanish, studying at any level, who have shown outstanding achievement in their area of studies.

The Prize is sponsored by the Delegation of the European Commission to New Zealand.

 

 

SCHOOL OF COMPUTING AND MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES

School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences Dean's Award for Excellence

The awards will be presented to the best 10 students, in each level, enrolled in an undergraduate degree at the School of Computing & Mathematical Sciences, as recommended by the School Board of Examiners.

Alan Turing Prize

The Alan Turing Prize is awarded annually to the student who has performed best in a third-year programme of studies which includes at least two Level III courses in Computer Science and at least two Level III course in Mathematics.

Alan Turing (1912 -1954) was an English Mathematician who made fundamental contributions to mathematics and computer science. He developed the notion of a theoretical structure, now called a Turing Machine, which could model any computable process and which had been the basis of modern sequential computers. During World War II he contributed significantly to the work of the allies in breaking German codes.

Waikato Branch NZFGW Emmy Noether Prize in Mathematics

The Waikato Branch NZFGW Emmy Noether Prize in Mathematics is awarded annually to the most outstanding woman student in her first year of Mathematics.

The Prize was made possible by the gift of a sum of money for capital investment from the Waikato Branch of the New Zealand Federation of Graduate Women.

Hilbert Prize in Mathematics

The Hilbert Prize in Mathematics is awarded annually to a student who has completed at least four courses at Level III in Mathematics in the year of the award.

John Turner Prize

The John Turner Prize is awarded to the student who achieves the highest mark for the 420 research project and report for the BCMS Honours paper Report of an Investigation.

The Prize was established in 1994 by the School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences, in recognition of Associate Professor Turner’s contribution to the School, and with the aim of encouraging excellence in the Bachelor of Computing and Mathematical Sciences (BCMS) Honours course Report of an Investigation.

Millennium Prize in Mathematics

The Millennium Prize in Mathematics is awarded annually to a student who has completed two full-time years of study at the University of Waikato, and who will be majoring in Mathematics or enrolling in a specified programme sponsored by the Mathematics Department.

Ramanujan Centenary Prize

The Ramanujan Centenary Prize is awarded annually to the student who has completed the degree of Bachelor of Computing and Mathematical Sciences with the best overall performance.

The Prize was established in 1987 by Professor E. V. Krishnamurthy in the centenary year of the greatest Indian mathematician – Ramanujan. Ramanujan (1887 – 1920) was a great Indian mathematical genius gifted with amazing computing powers and intuition. In spite of his utter poverty and lack of formal university education, his single-minded devotion to mathematics raised him to the status of a great twentieth century mathematician and the most romantic figure in the recent history of mathematics. Ramanujan is a source of inspiration to young students in mathematics and computing.

Von Neumann Prize in Mathematics

The Von Neumann Prize in Mathematics is awarded annually to a student in their first year of study at the University of Waikato, who is enrolled in at least one course offered by the Department of Mathematics and who is, in the opinion of the Chairperson of the Department, the most outstanding first-year student and worthy of the award.

Gordon Harris Bachelor of Computer Graphic Design Prize

The Gordon Harris Bachelor of Computer Graphic Design Prize is awarded biannually, to the top second-year student in the A-semester 2.2 stream and the top second-year student in B-semester 2.2 stream of the BCGD.

The Prize was established in 2005 by Gordon Harris Art Supplies to recognize the top overall second-year (2.2) student in each semester of the Bachelor of Computer Graphic Design (BCGD) at Waikato University.

Margaret Jeffries Prize in Computer Science

The Margaret Jeffries Prize in Computer Science is awarded annually to the top female student taking second-year Computer Science papers at the University of Waikato in the year of award. Students will be considered for the award on the basis of their grades in their best three Computer Science papers in the year of the award.

This Prize was established in 2006 by the Department of Computer Science in memory of Dr Margaret Jefferies, Senior Lecturer in the Department from 2001-6. This Prize is intended to encourage top female students to pursue studies in this field.

Environment Waikato Prize in Water Science

The Environment Waikato Prize in Water Science is awarded annually to a student enrolled at the University who, in the year of the award, has shown outstanding ability in School of Science and Engineering Level III courses dealing with water in the natural environment.

The Prize was established in 1990 by the Waikato Regional Council, and was originally known as The Waikato Regional Council Prize in Water Science.

Jared Simpson Memorial Prize in Biological and Earth Sciences

The Jared Simpson Memorial Prize in Biological and Earth Sciences is awarded annually to a student enrolled at the University who, in the year of the Award, has taken Level II courses in Biological Sciences and/or Earth Sciences for a first degree and who has submitted practical work of a meritorious nature. The Prize will be offered in alternate years in Biological Sciences (odd years) and Earth Sciences (even years).

The Prize was established in 1989 with donations from relatives and from staff and students of the University as a memorial to Jared Simpson, who was a student in the School of Science at the University of Waikato from 1987 until his death in a car accident in 1988.

Tom Shaw Memorial Prize in Biological Sciences

The Tom Shaw Memorial Prize in Biological Sciences is awarded annually to a student enrolled at the University who, in the year of the Award, has taken Biological Sciences as a main subject for a first degree of the University, who has included courses in Botany and Ecology at Level III within his or her programme of study, and who has shown outstanding ability in that subject.

The Prize was established in 1979 with a donation from relatives as a memorial to Tom Shaw, who was a student in the School of Science at the University of Waikato from 1977 until his death in 1979.

Vivienne Cassie Cooper Prize in Algae

The Vivienne Cassie Cooper Prize in Algae is awarded to an outstanding student studying any aspect of algae at the University of Waikato, at a graduate or postgraduate level.

The Prize was established by Vivienne Cassie Cooper in 2005. Vivienne’s career spanned fifty-five years in practising research on marine and freshwater micro-algae. Vivienne firmly believes in the value of classical and ecological studies to document the algal flora of New Zealand and to complement recent studies in microbial ecology of algae. Vivienne’s purpose in establishing this Prize was to encourage the study of algae in New Zealand, their life history, ecology, physiology, anatomy and genetics.

Waikato Botanical Society Graduate Prize

The Waikato Botanical Society Graduate Prize is awarded annually to the student enrolled in the Level V Botany paper, who is the highest-achieving student in the paper and receives not less than an ‘A’ grade.

The Prize was established in 2004 by the Waikato Botanical Society, an organisation that promotes education and knowledge of the native flora of the Waikato region. The Society intended that this Prize would encourage students to both participate in and continue their study of botany.

Waikato Botanical Society Undergraduate Prize

The Waikato Botanical Society Undergraduate Prize is awarded annually to the student enrolled in the Level II botany paper, who is the highest-achieving student in the paper and who also receives not less than an ‘A’ grade.

The Prize was established in 2004 by the Waikato Botanical Society, an organisation that promotes education and knowledge of the native flora of the Waikato region. The Society intends that this Prize will encourage students to both participate in, and continue their study of, botany.

 

Chemistry

Environment Waikato Prize in Water Science

The Environment Waikato Prize in Water Science is awarded annually to a student enrolled at the University who, in the year of the award, has shown outstanding ability in School of Science and Engineering Level III courses dealing with water in the natural environment.

The Prize was established in 1990 by the Waikato Regional Council, and was originally known as the Waikato Regional Council Prize in Water Science.

NZ Institute of Chemistry J. E. Allan Memorial Prize

The NZIC J. E. Allan Memorial Prize is awarded annually to the best second-year student in Chemistry.

The Prize was established in 1973 by the Waikato Branch of the New Zealand Institute of Chemistry in memory of James Eric Allan, MSc FNZIC. Mr Allan gained an international reputation as one of New Zealand’s foremost scientists through his outstanding contribution to the development of atomic absorption spectroscopy.

Orica-Chemnet First Year Chemistry Prize

This Orica-Chemnet First Year Chemistry Prize is awarded annually to a student enrolled at the University who, in the year of the award achieves the best performance in first-year Chemistry.

The Prize was established in 1996 by the Adhesives & Resins Division of ICI New Zealand to recognize excellence in Chemistry at the first-year level for students who are intending Chemistry majors.

Dow AgroSciences Prize in Third Year Chemistry

The Dow AgroSciences Prize in Third Year Chemistry is awarded annually to a student enrolled at the University who achieves the best performance over three of the third-year Chemistry core papers CHEM301 (Advanced Organic Chemistry), CHEM302 (Advanced Physical Chemistry), CHEM303 (Advanced Inorganic Chemistry) and CHEM306 (Advanced Analytical Chemistry).

The Prize was established in 2002 by Dow AgroSciences (NZ) Ltd to recognise excellence in Chemistry of students at the third-year undergraduate level, who are majoring in Chemistry.

School of Science and Engineering Chemistry Prize

The School of Science and Engineering Chemistry Prize is awarded to students enrolling for the first time at the University of Waikato in the first full-time year of a bachelors degree in the School of Science and Engineering.

 

Earth and ocean Sciences

Earth and Ocean Sciences' Excellence Award

The Earth Sciences Excellence Award is conferred annually to students studying Earth Sciences at any level, who, in the year of the award, have shown outstanding ability in the subject.

Environment Waikato Prize in Water Science

The Environment Waikato Prize in Water Science is awarded annually to a student enrolled at the University who, in the year of the award, has shown outstanding ability in School of Science and Engineering Level III courses dealing with water in the natural environment.

The Prize was established in 1990 by the Waikato Regional Council, and was originally known as the Waikato Regional Council Prize in Water Science.

H. S. Gibbs Prize in Earth Sciences

This H. S. Gibbs Prize in Earth Sciences is awarded annually to a student studying first- or second-year Earth Sciences, who has (for the year) submitted the best field report which demonstrates a broad understanding of Earth Sciences.

The Prize was established in 1979 with donations from Professor H. S. Gibbs, the University, its staff and students, and friends of Professor Gibbs on the occasion of his retirement from the University of Waikato.

Jeanette Gillespie Memorial Prize in Earth Science

The Jeanette Gillespie Memorial Prize in Earth Science is awarded annually to a student enrolled at the University who, in the year of the award, has taken at least two Level I courses in Earth Sciences for a first degree and who is academically the most meritorious student in Level I Earth Sciences.

The Prize was established in 2001 with donations from relatives and friends, and from staff and students of the University of Waikato and other universities and research institutes, as a tribute and memorial to Jeanette Lead Gillespie BSc MSc(Hons) who, prior to her sudden death from illness in October 2000, was undertaking research for the PhD degree in the Department of Earth Sciences and was for several years a part-time Assistant Lecturer in that Department with particular responsibilities for running Level I tutorial classes and laboratories.

Jared Simpson Memorial Prize in Biological and Earth Sciences

The Jared Simpson Memorial Prize in Biological and Earth Sciences is awarded annually to a student enrolled at the University who, in the year of the Award has taken Level II courses in Biological Sciences and/or Earth Sciences for a first degree and who has submitted practical work of a meritorious nature. The Prize will be offered in alternate years in Biological Sciences (odd years) and Earth Sciences (even years).

The Prize was established in 1989 with donations from relatives and from staff and students of the University as a memorial to Jared Simpson, who was a student in the School of Science at the University of Waikato from 1987 until his death in a car accident in 1988.

McCraw Prize in Communicating Earth Sciences Research

The McCraw Prize in Communicating Earth Sciences Research is awarded annually to a masters student enrolled at the University who, in the year of the award, is undertaking Level V courses in Earth Sciences, and who presents a conference paper at the annual Earth Sciences Student Conference, (organised by the Department), that is deemed to be outstanding in the presentation of its findings and setting a context for the research it describes.

The Prize was established in 2004 by Emeritus Professor John McCraw, who was the founding Professor of the Department of Earth Sciences from its foundation in 1970 until his retirement in 1988. Professor McCraw’s vision for a Department committed to studying the surface of processes of the Earth – its soils, hydrogen and geomorphology – to complement the more traditional aspects of geology has been realised in a Department which now holds a strong place in the Earth Sciences research and teaching communities of New Zealand. In his teaching and research Professor McCraw was tireless in emphasizing the importance of knowledge and research being well communicated.

Selby Prize in Earth Sciences

The Selby Prize in Earth Sciences is awarded annually to a masters student enrolled at the University who, in the year of the award, is undertaking Level V courses in Earth Sciences and who presents an outstanding conference paper at the annual Earth Sciences Student Conference.

The Prize was established in 2004 by Emeritus Professor Michael J. Selby, who was a staff member of the Department of Earth Sciences from its foundation in 1970 until his retirement in 2002. Professor Selby was committed to the Department becoming recognized as a leader in the wide range of disciplines that are included within Earth Sciences, including his own research areas which ranged from geomorphology to engineering geology.

Shannon Young Award

The Shannon Young Award is made annually to a student or students taking Level III Earth Sciences as a main subject for a first degree at the University, who has/have shown outstanding ability in Earth Sciences.

The Award was established in 1977 with donations from relatives, staff and students as a memorial to Shannon Young, a student in the School of Science at the University of Waikato from 1974 until her death at the end of 1976. Shannon had completed the requirements for a BSc degree, but sadly died before her graduation.

Waikato Geological and Lapidary Club Prize in Earth Sciences

The Waikato Geological and Lapidary Society Prize in Earth Sciences is awarded annually to an undergraduate student studying Earth Sciences, who has submitted the best geological field report for the year.

The Prize was established in 2006 with a donation from the Waikato Geological and Lapidary Society Inc. in recognition of the helpful support provided to the Society over many years by the Department of Earth and Ocean Sciences at the University of Waikato.

 

Materials and Process Engineering

Society of Materials New Zealand Inc (SMNZI) Prize

The Society of Materials New Zealand Incorporated (SMNZI) (formerly EMG group of IPENZ) awards a first prize and a second prize ($250 and $150 respectively) annually to materials students from The University of Waikato.
With the introduction of the materials & process engineering programme in the BE and other materials papers, the criteria have been modified to include all students who have completed the materials papers ENMP211, ENMP311, ENMP214 and ENMP215.

Physics

Bruce Liley Prize in Physics

The Bruce Liley Prize in Physics is open to all students enrolled in either the course pair PHYS100 (Exploring Physics) and PHYS103 (Physics for Scientists and Engineers 1), or the course pair ENEL111 (Introduction to Electronics) and PHYS103 (Physics for Scientists and Engineers 1). The Prize will take into account student performance in laboratories, tests, assignments and the final exam.

The Prize was established in 2002 by the Department of Physics and Electronic Engineering in honour of Professor Bruce Liley, the founding professor of Physics at the University of Waikato. The purpose of the Prize is to encourage excellence, and to motivate students to continue their Physics studies at Waikato University.

Dean's Medal for Academic Excellence

The Prize was established in 2007 to recognise the best student(s) in particular degree programmes at the Waikato Management School.

A student is eligible to receive the Dean’s medal if the degree has been completed between the day after the last date for eligibility to graduate at the April graduation ceremony in the preceding year and the last date for eligibility to graduate at the April graduation ceremony in the award year.

 

Accounting

Association of Chartered Certified Accountants Prizes

The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) sponsors three Prizes for students studying Accounting.

The ACCA Prize in Accounting for Management shall be awarded each semester to the group achieving the highest mark for the compulsory Company Project component in ACCT101 Accounting for Management. 

The ACCA Prize in Intermediate Financial Accounting shall be awarded to the student enrolled at the University who has the highest grade in the paper ACCT202 Intermediate Financial Accounting during the calendar year.

The ACCA Prize shall be awarded to the student enrolled at the University who has the highest grade in the paper ACCT412 Organisations and Society.

CCH Advanced Taxation Prize

The CCH Advanced Taxation Prize is awarded annually to the student enrolled in the Waikato Management School who is the best student of the year in the course ACCT451 (Advanced Taxation).

The Prize was established in 1991 by CCH New Zealand Limited.

Chartered Secretaries of New Zealand Prizes

The Chartered Secretaries of New Zealand (CSNZ) sponsor two Prizes.

 The CSNZ Prize in Business Law Research shall be awarded to the student enrolled at the University who receives the highest mark for the compulsory essay on corporate governance in ACCT422. 

The CSNZ Prize in Business Law shall be awarded to the student enrolled at the University who has the highest grade in the paper ACCT322.

Grant Thornton Prize in Accounting Theory

The Grant Thornton Prize in Accounting Theory is awarded to the top student in the paper ACCT301 (Accounting Theory), over the calendar year.

Grant Thornton International is one of the world’s leading organisations of independently owned and managed accounting and consulting firms providing assurance, and tax and specialist advice to independent businesses and their owners. The Firm operates in over 110 countries with over 510 offices worldwide including New Zealand. Grant Thornton hires many accounting graduates and wishes to support the education and development of accountants in this country. The Grant Thornton Prize in Accounting Theory has been established to recognise academic excellence within the Department of Accounting of the Waikato Management School.

Ian Beattie Prize in Taxation

The Ian Beattie Prize in Taxation is awarded annually to the student enrolled in the Waikato Management School who is the best student of the year in the course ACCT351 (Taxation).

The Prize was originally established in 1986 by the Hamilton office of Beattie Rickman (which was at that stage called Touche, Ross and Co) as the Beattie Rickman Prize in Taxation. The Prize was renamed the Ian Beattie Prize in Taxation in 2007.

Jerry Rickman Prize in International Tax

The Jerry Rickman Prize in International Tax is awarded annually to the student enrolled in the Waikato Management School who is the best student of the year in the course ACCT551 (International Tax Strategies).

The Prize was originally established in 1986 by the Hamilton office of Beattie Rickman (which was at that stage called Touche, Ross and Co.) as the Beattie Rickman Prize in Taxation. The Prize was renamed the Jerry Rickman Prize in International Taxation in 2007.

New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants Prizes

The New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants (NZICA) sponsors three Prizes for students studying Accounting.

The NZICA Prize for Accounting for Management is awarded to the student enrolled in the Waikato Management School who gains the highest grade in the paper ACCT101 (Accounting for Management), over the calendar year.

The NZICA Prize for Intermediate Financial Accounting is awarded annually to the student enrolled in the Waikato Management School who gains the highest grade in the paper ACCT202 (Intermediate Financial Accounting), over the calendar year.

The NZICA Prize for Management Accounting is awarded to the student enrolled in the Waikato Management School who gains the highest grade in the paper ACCT431 (Management Accounting), over the calendar year.

The New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants has supported academic excellence in Accounting and Finance at the Waikato Management School for many years.

PricewaterhouseCoopers Prize in Accounting Systems and Technology

The PricewaterhouseCoopers Prize in Accounting Systems and Technology is awarded annually to the student enrolled in the Waikato Management School who gains the highest grade in the paper ACCT313 (Accounting Systems and Technology), over the calendar year.

PricewaterhouseCoopers have been sponsoring Prizes to reward academic excellence in the Waikato Management School since 1990; these Prizes were originally under the name of Coopers and Lybrand, and were then renamed when this firm and Pricewaterhouse merged to become PricewaterhouseCoopers.

The PricewaterhouseCoopers Prize in Auditing is awarded annually to the student enrolled in the Waikato Management School who gains the highest grade in the paper ACCT341 (Auditing), over the calendar year.

The Staples Rodway Award is made annually to the student enrolled in the Waikato Management School, who gains the highest grade in the paper ACCT231 (Management Accounting: Accounting for Organisational Control), over the calendar year.

The Prize was established in 2003 by the Hamilton office of the accounting firm Staples Rodway.

 

Centre for Corporate and Executive Education

ANZ Financial Advisory Services Prize in Risk Management

The ANZ Financial Advisory Services Prize in Risk Management is awarded annually to the student enrolled at the Waikato Management School with the best aggregate results for the Postgraduate Certificate in Personal Risk Management papers EXEC742 Planning and Evaluation for Insurers and EXEC743 Comprehensive Insurance Plans.

The Financial Advisory Services Division of ANZ wishes to support academic achievement in the area of Risk Management. With this objective in mind the Division has established the ANZ Financial Advisory Services Prize in Risk Management at the Waikato Management School.

ANZ Financial Services Prize in Personal Financial Planning

The ANZ Financial Services Prize in Personal Financial Planning is awarded to the top student in the Waikato Management School, Postgraduate Diploma of Personal Financial Planning paper EXEC787 Comprehensive Financial Plans, in the calendar year.

The Financial Advisory Services Division of ANZ wishes to support academic achievement in the area of Personal Financial Planning. With this objective in mind the Division has established the ANZ Financial Advisory Services Prize in Personal Financial Planning at the Waikato Management School.

 

Economics

Brendan Thompson Prize in Economics

The Brendan Thompson Prize in Economics is awarded annually to the student enrolled in the Waikato Management School who gains the highest grade in either ECON306 (International Trade and Finance) or ECON406 (International Trade and Finance).

The Prize was established in 1996 in memory of Brendan Thompson and has been funded over the years by donations from friends, colleagues, former students of Brendan Thompson and the Department of Economics. From the time of his appointment to the University of Waikato in 1979, until his death in 1996, Brendan Thompson worked tirelessly to develop courses in applied international economics. He saw these courses as a way of introducing key economic principles and policy debates to students from a variety of backgrounds.

Foundation Professor’s Prize in Economics

The Foundation Professor’s Prize in Economics is awarded annually to the student enrolled in the Waikato Management School who gains the highest grade in the paper ECON100 (Business Economics and the New Zealand Economy), over the calendar year.

In 1965, John Ward was appointed one of the first professors of the University of Waikato. He was foundation Professor of Economics and was Head of the Department of Economics for twenty-five years. He was also foundation Dean of the School of Social Sciences and served as Dean of the School of Management Studies for a short period. He is an Emeritus Professor of the University of Waikato. Professor Ward has made generous contributions over a period of years to fund various Prizes for academic achievement in Economics.

Frankton–Te Rapa Jaycees Prize in Economics

The Frankton-Te Rapa Jaycees Prize in Economics is awarded annually to the student enrolled in the Waikato Management School who gains the highest grade in the paper ECON201 (Macroeconomics and Policy) or ECON204 (Quantitative Methods for Economics and Finance).

The Frankton-Te Rapa Jaycees Scholarship in Economics was established in 1968, and changed to a Prize in the year 2000.

J. T. Ward Prize in Economics

The J. T. Ward Prize in Economics is awarded annually to the student enrolled in the Waikato Management School who gains the highest grade in the paper ECON202 (Microeconomics and Business Economics), over the calendar year. The fund was established in 1900 on Professor Ward's retirement from the university with donations from his colleagues friends and former students.

In 1965, John Ward was appointed one of the first professors of the University of Waikato. He was Foundation Professor of Economics and was Head of the Department of Economics for twenty-five years. He was also the first Dean of the School of Social Sciences and served as Dean of the School of Management Studies for a short period. He is an Emeritus Professor of the University of Waikato.

Bill and Joan Flower Trust Prize in Global Economics

The Bill and Joan Flower Trust Prize in Global Economics is awarded annually to a student enrolled in the Waikato Management School who, in the year of the award, is enrolled in a second-year paper in Global Economics, and who is an outstanding student in that paper.

The Prize was established in 2004 by the Bill and Joan Flower Trust to recognise the importance of the global environment in programmes of study concerned with economics.

Bill and Joan Flower Trust Prize in Environmental Economics

The Bill and Joan Flower Trust Prize in Environmental Economics is awarded annually to a student enrolled in the Waikato Management School who, in the year of the award, is undertaking a third-year paper (or papers) in Economics, and who is enrolled either for a programme of study in which Economics is a major subject, or who is enrolled in the specified programme Resources and Environmental Planning (for a BSc or BSocSc); and is an outstanding student enrolled in a third-year paper in Environmental Economics.

The Prize was established in 2004 by the Bill and Joan Flower Trust to recognise the importance of economics in programmes of study concerned with the environment.

 

Finance

Institute Prize

The Institute Prize is awarded annually to the top student enrolled in the Waikato Management School whose programme of study will allow completion of an undergraduate or graduate qualification with a major or specialization in Finance during the next academic year.

The Australasian Institute of Banking and Finance sponsors almost fifty of these prizes across Australia and New Zealand.

PricewaterhouseCoopers Prize in Corporate Finance

The PricewaterhouseCoopers Prize in Corporate Finance is awarded annually to the student enrolled in the Waikato Management School who gains the highest grade in the paper FINA311 (Corporate Finance), over the calendar year.

PricewaterhouseCoopers have been sponsoring Prizes to reward academic excellence in the Waikato Management School since 1990; these Prizes were originally under the name of Coopers and Lybrand, and were then renamed when this firm and Pricewaterhouse merged as PricewaterhouseCoopers.

 

Management Communication

Ted Zorn WMS Alumni Award in Management Communication

The Ted Zorn WMS Alumni Award in Management Communication is made annually to a graduate of the Waikato Management School who majored in a discipline offered by the Department of Management Communication, and who has, since graduation, achieved excellence in a position in the field of management communication and (preferably) has made a contribution to sustainable management development.

This Prize was established in 2004 by Professor Ted Zorn in celebration of ten years of achievement by the Department of Management Communication in higher education and research. The Award provides an opportunity for peer recognition of graduates of the Department who have, since their graduation, distinguished themselves in a field of management communication.

 

Management Systems

Gallagher Group Prize in Advanced Supply Chain Management

The Gallagher Group Prize in Advanced Supply Chain Management is awarded to the student enrolled in the Waikato Management School who gains the highest grade in the paper MSYS576 (Advanced Supply Chain Management), over the calendar year.

Marketing

Westpac Prize in Marketing and International Management

The Westpac Prize in Marketing and International Management is awarded to the student enrolled in the Waikato Management School who gains the highest grade in the paper MKTG151 (Marketing and International Management), over the calendar year.

This is one of the longest-established academic prizes at the Waikato Management School and dates back to 1983 when it was known as the Waikato Savings Bank Prize in Management Studies. Over the years it has undergone a number of minor changes relating to course modifications and to alterations to the sponsoring bank’s ownership; for some years now it has traded as Westpac. However, the ongoing link continues, through this academic Prize, between the Waikato Management School and this major financial institution serving the Waikato region.

ANZ National Bank Prize in Relationship Marketing

The ANZ National Bank Prize in Relationship Marketing is awarded to the student enrolled in the Waikato Management School who gains the highest grade in the paper MKTG458 (Relationship Marketing).

The Prize has been established by the ANZ National Bank to recognise academic excellence in the field of relationship marketing.

 

Strategy and Human Resource Management

Alfred Marshall Prize in Human Resource Management

The Alfred Marshall Prize in Human Resource Management is awarded to the student enrolled in the Waikato Management School who gains the highest grade in the paper HRMG342 (Human Resource Management), over the calendar year.

The Prize was established in 1980 from a fund set up for the purpose by Professor Alfred (Fred) Marshall’s colleagues. The fund has subsequently been added to by contributions from the Waikato Management School. Professor Marshall was a foundation member of what was then known as the Department of Management Studies and the Prize was originally entitled the Alfred Marshall Prize in Administration.

G.J. Schmitt Prize in Strategic Innovation

The G.J. Schmitt Prize in Strategic Innovation is awarded to the student enrolled in the Waikato Management School who gains the highest grade in the paper STMG512 (Strategic Innovation), over the calendar year.

The Prize was established in 1981 from a fund set up for the purpose by Professor G. J. Schmitt’s colleagues. The fund has subsequently been added to by contributions from the Waikato Management School. Professor Schmitt was Foundation Professor of Management Studies and Dean of the School of Management Studies. The Prize was originally entitled the G. J. Schmitt Prize in Management Studies.

Dean’s Prize in Strategic Management

The Dean’s Prize in Strategic Management is awarded to the student enrolled in the Waikato Management School who gains the highest grade in the paper STRM391 (Strategic Management), over the calendar year.

The Prize was established in its current form in 2005. It does however have links back to a donation made by Winstone Ltd in 1985 to fund a Prize in Management Studies. This company however went out of existence in 1988 and the Waikato Management School has taken over responsibility for the ongoing funding of the revamped Prize.

University of Waikato Alumni Association Prizes for Excellence

The University of Waikato Alumni Association Prize in Excellence is awarded to second-year students who achieved the highest grade point average (GPA) in each School or Faculty in their first-year, full-time, undergraduate studies at the University of Waikato in the year preceding the awarding of the Prize. The Prizes, to be offered in alternate years to the Alumni Master’s Scholarship, are intended to celebrate academic excellence University-wide.

The Prize was established by the University of Waikato Alumni Association (Te Rauika Pukenga) in 1998 with funding raised through the use of the University’s Visa affinity card introduced by the Association in 1995.

 University of Waikato Vice-Chancellor’s Prize for Academic Excellence

Principals from selected secondary schools are invited to nominate Year 13 students who demonstrate excellence in academic abilities and particular achievements, e.g. duxes, prize-winners, etc. The Selection Panel may also take into consideration extra-curricular activities, community service, leadership roles and other relevant personal qualities.
