The Student Health Service
The Student Health Service is a purpose-built facility which is able to provide full medical services. We provide a General Practice service for students and an Emergency Medical Service for all people including staff and visitors on campus.
New Zealand Students are encouraged to enrol with the Student Health Service. If you would like to enrol please fill out the appropriate PHO form found on the left hand side of this page (above the Community Services Card link). If you choose to enrol this means enrolled patients are seen for free as far as routine consultations are concerned and have repeat prescriptions done without charge. Non-enrolled patients have to pay a consultation fee to see the doctor depending on whether they have a Community Services Card or not and a consultation fee to see the nurse. They also have to pay a small charge for repeat prescriptions. Extra charges apply to all students for specific medical examinations (insurance, pre-employment, driving etc) and for travel vaccines and minor surgery. International students - please see below.
There are four doctors, three nurses and two receptionists to look after your healthcare needs. Our staff have had plenty of experience with students and are happy to discuss any health concerns that you may have. These include sickness, injury, health maintenance, vaccination, contraception, cervical smears and STD checks.
The service is open Monday 9am - 5pm and Tuesday to Friday from 8.30am to 5pm throughout the year.
Appointments can be made at the reception desk or by phoning 07-838-4037.
International Students are required to have medical insurance and this insurance pays the costs associated with most consultations and most prescriptions. Some insurers allow the Student Health Service to bill the costs directly to the insurance company, but other insurers require that the student pays the costs and then applies for reimbursement. Some consultations aren't covered by insurance and these include consultations for pre-existing medical conditions, pregnancy care, contraception, sexually transmitted diseases, travel vaccines, minor surgery and Immigration Medicals. These consultations costs need to be paid by the student at the time of the consultation
