International students health insurance and support

International students are required to have medical insurance. This insurance pays the costs associated with most consultations and prescriptions.

If you have questions about what your insurance will cover, please contact your insurance provider or the International Office.

Hamilton

Student Safe and Unicare are insurance providers that allow Student Health to bill the costs directly to the insurance company for most consultations. Evidence of your current insurance policy must be brought to your appointment, otherwise you will be required to pay and apply for reimbursement.

Other insurers require the student to pay the cost and then apply for reimbursement.

Some consultations are NOT covered by insurance. This includes:

  • Any pre-existing medical conditions (anything you had prior to coming to NZ)
  • Pregnancy care
  • Contraception / cervical screening / sexually transmitted infections
  • Travel vaccines
  • Minor surgerys

These consultation costs need to be paid by the student at the time of consultation.

Waikato Sexual Health Clinic offers free treatment to international students for sexually transmitted infections.
