Originally from Canada, I joined Student Learning as its Director in January 2008. I have a PhD in educational technology from the University of Toronto and have taught both computers in education and applied linguistics in Canada, Japan, and New Zealand. My current research includes tertiary level eLearning, technology use in language teaching, and the scholarship of teaching and learning.

Team Leader

I have worked in the learning development field since 1990. My current role is Team Leader in Student Learning in which I work closely with the director on strategic directions for our unit. My specific focus is Student Learning's provision of one-to-one consultations and support for graduate and higher degree students through targetted workshops in Faculties and the Doctoral Writing Conversations initiative. Outside the university a major interest is the promotion of film culture in New Zealand. I serve as a Justice of the Peace on campus.

My role in Student Learning is two-fold. Firstly, I am the Mathematics Tutor (half- time) providing mathematics support for all university students. I provide one-to-one help, run workshops, and provide online material in Moodle. I am currently working on making the online material more interactive. Secondly, I am the administrator and receptionist (half-time) for Student Learning.

Portuguese born, raised in Canada and residing in NZ - I'd call myself a multicultural, multilingual and very adaptable person. I have been a teacher for over 20 years in a variety of fields and more recently teaching English to International students at Waikato University. I joined the Student Learning team with a passion for e-Learning and e-Teaching and want to support students to become independent life long learners - to experience the joy of learning!

I come from a background in Applied Linguistics, and have taught at the University since 2001, but joined Student Learning at the end of 2008. As well as the usual day-to-day student interactions in Student Learning, my role as eLearning Coordinator is provision and maintenance of electronic resources, especially tools that enhance grammatical and linguistic independence. Currently I am working on developing a web-based self-access grammar product to help (domestic) students acquire more lingusitic precision.

I have had a long association with the University of Waikato, so joining the Student Learning team felt like a home-coming. I completed my undergraduate degree in the 1990s and tutored in social science, education and bridging programmes before working in administration, journalism and librarianship. I am committed to ensuring everyone has the opportunity to succeed in tertiary study. Learning development is a partnership and my role is to work with you one-on-one, as well as on the range of workshops and programmes we offer to develop study and academic writing skills.
