Why study a MBM?

This one-year master's degree (180 points) provides a transformative business education that will take your career to new heights, and help you become aware of your own abilities as a future business leader.

The Waikato MBM will give you a comprehensive understanding of the global business environment. It will also prepare you to take on a wide range of management and leadership roles in any industry.

This taught master's programme is designed for graduates of any bachelor's degree – from arts and engineering to teaching and social sciences – who wish to expand their career prospects and increase their earning potential. Previous business experience is not required.

Over 12 months (or longer if you study part-time), you'll hone your skills in all aspects of business and management: planning for strategic growth, marketing, digital business, economics, financial analysis, managing people in organisations, global business, supply chain management, design thinking and innovation, and sustainable and responsible management.

Learn how to carry out applied business research, analyse data and issues, question ideas and findings, and apply different approaches to solve business and management problems.

MBM graduates are smart business professionals with strong communication, critical thinking and problem solving skills. You will develop the confidence to lead teams, collaborate with others, and manage organisational change.

Course content

Your learning experience in the MBM degree is designed to be practical, relevant, challenging and inspiring.

There are a total 11 papers in the course and you will have about 30 hours of classes and learning per week.

Learning is through a mix of classroom lectures, real-world case studies, group assignments, video, social media, creative problem solving and reflective learning.

For one of your assignments, students work in small teams to undertake a virtual consultancy project for a local business. These projects are managed by Waikato Management School with input from the host organisations.

Students will also develop applied business research skills by working individually on a case study, and then writing a business research report.

For the Integrative Learning Project, you will work in small teams to develop a business plan for your own entrepreneurial start-up business, and then pitch your ideas to a group of senior business leaders in a 'Dragons' Den'-style situation.

We can also provide students and recent graduates with career tools and support to help you on your job-hunting journey.

Please note:

The Waikato MBM qualification does NOT provide the depth of specialised study that is required for admission to a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). MBM graduates who wish to proceed to advanced research or doctoral study will need to complete additional research methodology and postgraduate papers.
