This paper examines the role and functions of English within the globalisation of communication. It particularly focuses on intercultural encounters within business, education and the media, familiarising students with the diversity of world Englishes spoken and used. Utilising this overall topic, the paper will combine critical and analytical skills in the areas of reading, writing, and listening to help students from non-English speaking backgrounds gain greater levels of sophistication in their use of English within academic contexts and their knowledge of its use in the wider world community.
