This paper uses a framework of relevant contemporary topics, including Te Ao Māori to develop students' language competence. We will begin by identifying the main ideas in academic texts. We will then work on developing written and oral communication skills. Throughout the paper, students will build their academic vocabulary and confidence in communicating in academic contexts. Teaching methods and strategies will include te Kaupapa Māori approaches.
