Whaea Shirley Tuteao (Ngāti Mahuta) is a valued staff member at Te Kura Toi Tangata, where she has guided and nurtured countless students throughout their academic journeys. A familiar rūruhi and highly respected kaikaranga, she holds a cherished presence on marae across Tainui, including fulfilling a rūruhi role at the University for many years.

Beyond her contributions to education, Whaea Shirley has played an influential role in tribal governance and community leadership, tirelessly advocating for the rights and wellbeing of her people. Born and raised in Tahaaroa, she comes from a large whānau and maintains deep connections to her ancestral lands.

Her commitment to Māori communities is unwavering, as she continues to champion wellbeing, cultural preservation, and the revitalisation of te reo Māori, ensuring it thrives for future generations.
