The OnsITE (Initial Teaching Education) Programme is a unique collaboration between schools, the University of Waikato, and future teachers like you.

  • Schools choose you: Schools pick the best candidates for the programme, and you might even land a part-time teaching assistant job during the year! 

  • Become a great teacher: Learn how to build strong relationships with students, create engaging lessons, and meet all the requirements to become a registered teacher in New Zealand. 

What we're looking for

  • Show your potential: Schools will assess your passion for teaching, ability to connect with students, and relevant qualifications (bachelor's degree required, background in Trades/Technology, or with high levels of fluency in Te Reo Māori or Pacific language). You might even teach a sample lesson! 

  • Jump right in: Immerse yourself in a real school environment for a year, gaining hands-on experience alongside experienced teachers. 

  • Commit to the programme:  The OnsITE (Initial Teaching Education) Programme runs intensively from mid-January to November, with some in-person sessions on campus at the University of Waikato. 

  • Pass the tests: Basic literacy and numeracy tests are required for entry.

What schools provide

University of Waikato's role

  • Delivers the programme: The University of Waikato provides an approved programme recognised for teacher registration in New Zealand.

  • Ongoing support: University staff visit you twice throughout the programme to offer guidance and support. 

  • Adapting to the future: The programme incorporates the latest research in education and adapts to Ministry of Education initiatives.

The outcome

Upon successful completion of the OnsITE (Initial Teaching Education) Programme and coursework, you'll graduate with your teaching diploma and be eligible for provisional registration to teach in New Zealand. High-performing students can even pursue a Master of Teaching and Learning degree.
