Alpha Joy
Alpha Joy’s decision to transfer from Mumbai to Waikato gave her more than a degree. It gave her a sense of belonging in a new country and the skills to lead with confidence in the corporate world.

From a young age, Alpha Joy was inspired by the passion and dedication her family showed in their careers. This ignited her ambition to make an impact in the world of business – with a small, creative twist.
A Bachelor of Business with a major in Marketing was the perfect blend of her passion for dance, creative interests and strategic business skills to get Alpha started on her journey.
While she didn’t plan to study internationally at first, originally enrolling at the University of Mumbai, a quick Google search for universities in New Zealand brought up the University of Waikato. She was immediately drawn to its global rankings, industry focus and vibrant student life – aspects she says haven’t disappointed.
“Now having been a student here, I know first-hand how deeply the University of Waikato supports academic growth, professional development and personal belonging,” she explains.
Another highlight of her time at Waikato was the emphasis on work-integrated learning. She recalls papers such as MNGMT363 The Impact Lab and MRKTG309 Marketing Capstone papers, which helped her to develop creative, analytical and intercultural skills needed for the workforce.
“My goal now is to move into project management to complement my marketing expertise and contribute meaningfully to corporate organisations that value innovation, collaboration, and global perspectives.”
While studying, Alpha volunteered as part of the University’s International Buddy Programme and was an International Student Ambassador. Sharing her experience as an international student with others helped her to adjust to her new environment.
“Whether it was adapting to a new country, meeting other students from diverse backgrounds or taking on unfamiliar responsibilities, I discovered that growth happens the moment you choose to step outside your comfort zone,” she says.
Alpha is now looking forward to joining her family in the corporate world, but takes with her friendships, memories and life lessons from her time at Waikato.
“Studying at the University of Waikato has been one of the most transformative experiences of my life. Every step I’ve made has reaffirmed that I made the right decision, and I am grateful for the people, the opportunities, and the sense of belonging Waikato has given me. It will always remain a significant chapter of my journey.”
