01 Apr 2026

The University of Waikato Council has this week confirmed the appointment of Parekawhia McLean as its representative of Te Arikinui Nga wai hono i te po.

Parekawhia (Ngāti Mahanga – Hourua, Waikato, Ngāti Maniapoto) has been a member of Council and Chair of Te Rōpū Manukura, the committee of Council made up of iwi representatives, since December 2021.

A Distinguished Alumna of the University recognised for her impact on public policy and the public sector, Parekawhia has remained deeply committed to the economic and social betterment of her tribe, Waikato-Tainui.

University of Waikato Chancellor Susan Hassall says Council has been very fortunate to have had the benefit of Parekawhia’s significant experience and wisdom over the last four years.

“Her appointment to this special role of the University Council leaves a vacancy for Chair of Te Rōpū Manukura. We are working through this and will make an announcement in due course,” Mrs Hassall says.

“In the meantime, I am grateful to Te Arikinui for her care in selecting Parekawhia as her representative, and anticipate the continuation of a strong, future-focused relationship.”

Under the University Council appointments statute, one member is appointed in consultation with Te Arikinui.
