Right across the road from our Tauranga city campus, Selwyn Street Studios offers 88 standard and 3 accessible self-contained studio rooms. It’s a great choice for students who want modern living in the heart of Tauranga city.
Durham Mews
Durham Mews is just a 2-minute walk from campus and offers six three-bedroom flats. It’s a great option for students in their second year and beyond who are looking for a bit more independence while still staying connected to uni life.

Our University-managed accommodation in Tauranga has one Residential Leader (RL) to every 23 residents to provide help and guidance. RLs are students too so they are likely to know the kinds of issues you might have and can help you figure them out.
Staff are rostered on duty every day, including evenings and weekends, so there is always someone around to help.
Information
All accommodation applications are made online. You do not need to have been accepted into your study programme to apply.
In most cases we will also require a reference.
Applications for Trimester B open 1 April 2024.
Applications for 2025 open on 1 August 2024.
New Zealand School Leaver
For the purpose of an accommodation application, a 'School Leaver' is someone who has left or is leaving a New Zealand school in 2023 or 2024 and will be starting their Tertiary Studies in 2025.
If this is you then in addition to the online application we require a Common Confidential Reference Form (CCRF) from your School. These are usually completed by a teacher, careers advisor or principal, and forwarded to us directly by the school.
New Zealand non-School Leaver
A character Reference is required for any other New Zealand student who left School prior to 2023. The reference should be filled in by someone such as an employer, tutor, community leader, minister, or sports coach.
International Student
International Students who attended a New Zealand School in 2023 or 2024 are also required to supply a CCRF (as above).
No reference is required for an International Student who did not attend a New Zealand school.
In order for you to be considered for a place when we make our first round of offers, please ensure you have completed your application and submitted a reference (when applicable) by 30 September 2024.
We often receive more applications for a Hall that we have places. Whilst we over offer for some halls given the expectation we will receive cancellations and withdrawals, we can not guarantee we can make an offer for your preferred hall. You may be offered an alternative hall.
The information on your application along with your academic achievement to date and the comments and recommendations on your reference are used when assessing your application.

The University of Waikato Tauranga Campus Residential Scholarship is one that is designed to assist school leavers and returning undergraduate University of Waikato students with an accommodation credit up to the value of $8,000.

To keep everyone safe while living in University-managed accommodation in Tauranga, we have rules and regulations. Please read the following information regarding your contract, deposit, rules and regulations before accepting an offer.
Detailing our joint responsibilities
If you are successful and offered a place, you will need to accept your offer and pay your deposit/admin fee online by the due date indicated on your offer letter. If you don’t, the offer expires and your place will be offered to another student. When accepting your contract to reside in University-managed accommodation, you are agreeing to the rules and regulations and the fees and costs set out above.
You are required to pay five weeks rent in advance plus any optional extras before moving in. This payment is due January 2025.
Frequently asked questions
Preference is given to students enrolled for a full academic year (February – November). If you are starting your studies in July (B Trimester), accommodation offers will be made subject to availability.
No, the room is booked for the entire academic year.
It’s your responsibility to keep your room and en suite clean and tidy. A housekeeper will clean and maintain shared bathrooms (excluding en suites), hallways, lounges and common areas.
Residents are encouraged to leave their vehicle at home and use public transport to get around the city. A shuttle service is provided for residents to do their grocery shopping and two e-bikes are available for residents' use. For residents who choose to bring a vehicle, there is restricted free on-street parking in the surrounding CBD area. There is limited onsite parking for residents with full accessibility needs that can be negotiated at an extra cost and subject to availability.
Residents’ guests are allowed to stay at the discretion of the Residential Life Manager. Overnight guests must be registered with the Duty Residential Leader by 8pm, and a fee may be charged to the resident.
You can bring laptops, TVs, gaming equipment, stereos, alarm clocks, computers, hair straighteners, hair dryers and curling irons. If you bring your own computer we recommend you use a surge protector. Electric blankets are permitted, provided they have a current safety certificate issued by a qualified electrician within the last six months.
You are not allowed to bring heaters, irons, toasters, jugs, grills, microwaves, fridges or other cooking appliances.
No. Selwyn Street Studios is self-catered accommodation.
Each room has its own mini fridge, each floor has a kitchenette (with fridge, microwave, hot water zip and dishwasher) suitable for preparing snacks, and a full kitchen with cooking facilities, dishwashers and fridge/freezers is located on the basement level.
