International tuition costs

Estimate your annual tuition fees and costs. Discover the approximate tuition fees and other costs you will likely incur as an international student enrolled in one year of full-time study.

How your fees are calculated

Tuition fees are calculated on a per-paper basis: you only pay for the papers you choose. Search using Find a Paper.

You enrol in a number of papers during each year of study. Tuition fees are based on your degree and level of the paper.

In New Zealand, most universities use a paper‑based tuition fee structure. This means students are charged fees based on each individual paper (what we call a course, unit or module) they enrol in, rather than paying a single flat tuition fee for an entire qualification.  That means our published 2026 tuition fees are indicative only and the final fee maybe be different.

These 2026 indicative tuition fees are applied to papers (courses/units/modules) enrolled in the 2026 academic year only.  For papers enrolled in 2027, the 2027 tuition fee will be applied.

To support our students, offer letters issued for B and C Trimesters in 2026 will include the 2027 indicative tuition fee, to provide greater transparency of future fees, and to support students' financial planning for the 2027 academic year.

Why does my offer letter have next year's fees?

To support our students, offer letters issued for B and C Trimesters in 2026 will include the 2027 indicative tuition fee, to provide greater transparency of future fees, and to support students' financial planning for the 2027 academic year.

Additional fees

There are some more levies that you will need to pay that cover University services. There may also be additional non-tuition fees such as the International students refund administration charge you might need to pay.

Non-tuition related fees and costs

Where to find tuition fees

Each qualification displays the most accurate and up-to-date tuition fees information. Start by searching for your desired qualification.

Once on the qualification page:

  1. go to the "Degree information" section
  2. select the "Fees and scholarships" tab

Please note that the tuition fees shown are estimates; and the actual cost may vary. All amounts shown are in New Zealand dollars (NZD) and refer to study in 2026 and 2027 unless otherwise specified.

Higher Research Degrees (PhD, Research Thesis, MPhil, EdD)

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Approximate tuition fees for 120 points of study are shown.

New international PhD students, studying full-time, may be eligible to pay domestic New Zealand annual tuition fees ($7,567 - $8,037 (2026)).

International Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) domestic fees entitlement

International Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) students enrolled in recognised research programmes at New Zealand universities may qualify for domestic student status. To hold domestic student status, international Doctor of Philosophy students must be resident in New Zealand during their study, except for temporary absences for the purposes of their research (conducting research and fieldwork appropriate to their course of study). The University defines a 'temporary absence' as no more than 12 months in total during the period of their candidature. A student enrolled in a New Zealand university but remaining resident overseas does not have domestic student status.

If you do not qualify for the International Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) domestic fees entitlement, you will need to pay full international PhD tuition fees.
