Re-entry to study

Being required to apply for re-entry does not mean that your academic journey is over. The re-entry process ensures you have the best opportunity for future success.

The re-entry process provides the University with information to understand what affected your progress and what support you will have in place if you return.

Submission deadline

Once you receive your re-entry notification you have five days to submit your application to be considered for Trimester B. Submit your application through your MyWaikato portal.

What re-entry means

If you have not met the progression requirements of your degree, your enrolment cannot continue automatically into the next trimester.

You may be eligible to submit an application for re-entry. If approved, your return to study will include conditions to make sure the right support is in place.

A few things to know:

  • Re-entry is not automatic or guaranteed.
  • If your re-entry application is approved, any conditions set are there to support you and must be met.
  • If you have previously been granted re-entry, a further application may not be approved.

The re-entry process

  1. Receive re-entry email

    Notified by email and in your MyWaikato in-tray.

  2. Submit re-entry application

    Submit your application for re-entry through your MyWaikato portal by the deadline.

  3. Application is assessed

    Your re-entry application is assessed by the University. This takes up to seven days.

  4. Receive outcome

    You are notified of the outcome by email.

  5. Accept conditions of re-entry

    If you have been approved for re-entry into your degree, you will need to accept the conditions outlined in MyWaikato.

Enrolment on hold

While your re-entry application is being assessed, your enrolment will remain on hold. 
If you are already enrolled in papers for the following trimester, those papers will be withdrawn if your application is not approved.

What to include in your re-entry application

Your re-entry application should help the University understand your situation and your plan for future success.

Include:

  • what circumstances affected your academic performance
  • whether those circumstances have changed
  • what steps you have taken to improve your chances of success
  • what university support services you plan to use if you return
  • how you plan to approach your study differently
  • what you have learned from this experience

Submit all supporting documentation with your application, for example medical certificates or other relevant evidence. Include everything relevant, even if you have shared it with another part of the University before. The decision-maker only sees what you submit.

You can submit a formal appeal for your re-entry application through your MyWaikato portal.

You can also contact the Waikato Students' Union Student Support and Advocacy team at support@wsu.org.nz. Their service is free, confidential, and independent from the University.
