Sir Edmund Hillary Scholarships


Closing: 31 Oct 2009
Level: Entrance, School Leaver, Undergraduate (All years), Graduate, Post graduate
Value: Cost of tuition fees and access to facilities & services appropriate to sporting code or arts

These scholarships are offered by The University of Waikato to recognise excellence in sporting and artistic activities of students who are academically qualified to enter the University. The remuneration of the scholarships can be applied towards tuition fees and associated charges. The scholarship also facilitates access to facilities and services within the University and the wider community to foster continued excellence in sporting and artistic activities of the scholars.

The purpose of the Sir Edmund Hillary Scholarship is to provide support for students to achieve a high academic standard in a programme of study at the University of Waikato, excellence in a sporting code or the creative or performing arts, and to develop leadership qualities through a tailored leadership and personal development programme.

The scholarship may be extended for a further year or years up to the minimum time to complete the degree for which the scholar is enrolled. Such extension will be subject to the scholar's satisfactory academic progress (a minimum of a B average in all papers undertaken) and sustained performance in the sporting code or in the creative or performing arts in which the scholar is involved.

Applications are welcome from students at any level of study.

The Hillary Medals

Level: Final year of study
Value: $1,500

The award of the Hillary Medal was established in 2006, to recognize excellence in graduates of the Sir Edmund Hillary Programme.

The Hillary Medals will be offered on an annual basis to students currently on the Sir Edmund Hillary Programme, who will be completing their degree in the year of application.

To be eligible for consideration for the Award, applicants must demonstrate:
(a) a high level of academic achievement
(b) a very high level of achievement to date in either a sporting code, or a performing or creative art
(c) exceptional leadership qualities.

University of Waikato Summer Research Scholarships


Closing: 31 Aug 2009
Level: Undergraduate, Honours, First year masters
Value: $5,000

The Summer Research Scholarship Programme for 2009/2010 will have two closing dates, 31 August 2009 for the School of Science & Engineering and the School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences and the 30 September 2009 for all other Schools/Faculties/Colleges. The University of Waikato Summer Research Scholarships are an initiative to provide promising undergraduate, honours, and first-year masters students with the opportunity to experience the challenges and rewards of research work.The Summer Research Scholarships are offered in various disciplines during the summer study break. The number of Scholarships offered in any one year will be determined by the availability of funding and appropriate supervision. A full list of projects on offer for the School of Science & Engineering and the School of Mathematical Sciences and all other schools/faculties/colleges are now available for students to apply for.


It is the recipient’s and the Supervisor’s joint responsibility to ensure that the project is completed on time. The Supervisor is responsible for obtaining Ethics Committee approval, should this be necessary.

University of Waikato Masters Research Scholarships


Closing: 30 Apr and 31 Oct each year
Level: Masters (Final Year)
Value: $12,000

The University of Waikato has for a number of years offered Scholarships to students studying at Masters level with the purpose of encouraging research at the University of Waikato by assisting with course-related costs. From 2007, the scholarship also contains a contribution towards the cost of fees

University of Waikato Doctoral Scholarship


Closing: 30 Apr and 31 Oct each year
Level: PhD
Value: $22,000 pa, and tuition fees

The University of Waikato has, for a number of years offered scholarships to students studying full-time at Doctoral level, these scholarships are intended to assist full-time candidates to complete a Doctoral degree at the University of Waikato.
