Emergency system tests at the University

The purpose of these tests is to identify any issues and help ensure the safety of staff, students, and the wider University community.

The University is testing its emergency response systems across both its Hamilton and Tauranga campuses over the next two weeks.

These tests are run twice a year to make sure any issues with systems are identified and resolved for the continued safety of staff, students, and the wider University community.

These systems include immediate emergency alerts, our building lockdown processes, communication channels, and staff and student understanding of the University’s emergency procedures.

Hamilton

1.30pm, Wednesday 29 April

Tauranga

1.30pm, Wednesday 6 May

On the Hamilton campus in Hillcrest, an emergency siren will sound for three minutes.

At the Tauranga campus in the CBD, a PA announcement will be made inside the building.

At each campus, access-controlled doors will automatically lock for approximately 15 minutes while the remote lockdown system is tested, and our campus security team completes their checks. Nobody will be able to enter buildings during this time but can leave buildings if required.

Staff, students, and University tenants will also receive a text message through an emergency alert system at the beginning and end of each test at the campus they are primarily employed or enrolled at.

Emergency services have been notified, and members of the public should not be alarmed if they hear the siren at the Hamilton campus on Wednesday afternoon.

In the event of an active emergency, updates will be provided on our website at waikato.ac.nz/emergency. We encourage our community to read more about our emergency procedures, so they are prepared for any incident on campus.
