Students affected by Cyclone Gabrielle are being assured that study will be waiting for them, when they’re ready and able.
The University of Waikato is assuring students affected by Cyclone Gabrielle that study will still be here waiting for them, when they’re ready and able.
Director of Student Services, Mike Calvert, says there is no rush to be on campus ahead of the annual Orientation Week celebrations or before classes start.
“We’re well aware that a lot of our new and returning students will be facing difficult and uncertain times, so we want them to know that we’re here to support them as much as we can, whether that’s on campus or from a distance.”
Mike says students shouldn’t worry if they can’t make it to campus this week for O Week or for next week when classes start.
“If and when students have internet connectivity, they will be able to attend or catch up on any classes online. We understand that it’s a difficult time at the moment and we’re here to help in any way we can.”
Students facing financial hardship or changes in circumstances should get in touch to discuss what sort of support is available.
The Halls of Residence will hold rooms for students until they’re able to safely travel to campus.
“If students can’t move into their Hall this weekend and they’re able to let us know, that would be great. Rooms will be held and the Hall community will be ready for our students when they’re ready for us,” Mike says.
