Leading the national anthem at the local kindergarten concert was the moment that Tayla Alexander knew she wanted pursue a singing career. Ever since, Tayla’s unique voice has taken her all over the country. She has performed to crowds of more than 200,000 people, toured with the National Symphony Orchestra and sung live on numerous television programmes. In 2012, Tayla’s voice caught the ear of an independent music label and her debut album Songbird peaked at number four on the Independent Music New Zealand album chart. Tayla was the youngest artist to feature on the New Zealand album chart, and her cover of Kate Bush’s Wuthering Heights reached one million views on YouTube this year. Tayla won a scholarship to train at the Auckland Opera Studio, and she's currently working with Gray Bartlett on her musical recordings which will be released in the coming year. Tayla is in her first year of a Bachelor of Music majoring in Classical Voice, and chose Waikato for the supportive and passionate environment that the Hillary Programme provides.
