The University of Waikato is one of New Zealand's major research organisations, playing a key role in the local economy and making a significant contribution to national innovation. We are at the centre of a network of research institutions and industry in the Waikato that is responsible for 25% of New Zealand's research output - an engine room for our country's social and economic growth.

Research is also our University's lifeblood with research-related activities providing a quarter of our revenue. It informs our teaching and advances the knowledge we share with our communities.

Research is painstaking; it takes time and is expensive to do. However, investment in research is critical if New Zealand is to be well-equipped to take advantage of emerging technologies and to step into the top ranks of equivalent OECD countries. Research is also key to attracting and retaining the best and brightest minds.

There are many ways in which you can invest in our research programmes. The University of Waikato has achieved national and international distinction in many subjects, and our areas of research excellence are recognised in the University’s five institutes. They are world-class platforms for the whole research pipeline - from discovery to application and commercialisation - and allow a cohesive multi-disciplinary approach to society’s big issues.
