About Daniel

Daniel is an applied researcher, educator and practitioner in biomechanics and  strength & conditioning. His vision is to evolve strength & conditioning through innovative evidence based practice driven by advancements in science and technology.  Over the past 10 years, he has worked as a lecturer in Biomechanics, Human Anatomy, Resistance Training Design, Sports Science, Exercise Prescription, and Personal Training. Daniel  has also worked as a Strength & Conditioning Coach with a range of developmental, professional and national level athletes in the following sports: rugby, ice hockey,  football,  two junior Canadian moguls champions, freestyle ski world and X-Games champions, Winter Olympic medalists, along with luge, bobsleigh, Paralympic snowboard, wheelchair rugby and defense force operatives.

Daniel has earned degrees in Strength & Conditioning (PhD - AUT University- New Zealand Rugby Union), Sports Science (MSc - Edith Cowan University) and Kinesiology (HonBK - Lakehead University); and holds the following certifications: Strength & Conditioning Specialist (National Strength and Conditioning Association) and Tactical Strength and Conditioning Specialist (Australian Strength and Conditioning Association).

Daniel is currently working as a Research Fellow based at the University of Waikato Adams Centre for High Performance, as well as a Strength and Conditioning Coach with New Zealand Rugby Sevens.

  • Development and Application of an Eccentric Force-Velocity Profile (with PhD Student Conor McNeil, USA)
  • Measuring Responses to Heat in Rugby Sevens Athletes (with PhD Student Stephen Fenemor, NZ)
  • Comparison of Vertical and Horizontal Strength Training to Improve Scrum Force in Rugby Union Players (with MSc Student Conway Bradey, NZ)

Research Interests

Daniel's research interests include strength and conditioning, rugby research, performance technology, biomechanical profiling, injury prevention, force (rate, magnitude, direction and duration), velocity development, and training strategies. He has have published a number of peer reviewed research articles and is an active peer-reviewer for the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, Journal of Applied Biomechanics, International Journal of Sports Physiology and Performance, and Frontiers in Physiology. He has also had the privilege to present on a number of the above topics at Strength and Conditioning, Biomechanics, Sports Medicine, and Sport and Exercise Science Conferences throughout the southern and northern hemispheres.
