Enhancing Sporting Performance
This exciting programme, designed for athletes of all levels and students studying sport, is taught by experts in the University of Waikato's Te Huataki Waiora - School of Health. The rugby option is taught in conjunction with the Chiefs Super Rugby Team, where students will train alongside the team and learn from expert coaches!
Delivered through hands-on learning in the classroom, labs, modern gym, and trips to local sports organisations, students will develop knowledge in nutrition, recovery practices, physiology and prescription, strength and conditioning, coaching, performance analysis, and biomechanics.
While studying at Waikato, athletes will have the opportunity to continue with their sport, practicing with local teams in the evenings and competing on the weekends. Students will have access to state-of-the-art high performance training centres where researchers work with elite teams, including New Zealand Cycling and New Zealand Sevens rugby, to reach peak athletic performance.

Paper Title: Enhancing Sporting Performance
HSHUP200 (paper code)
Credit
15 points (3-4 US credits; 7.5 ECTS)
This interdisciplinary paper brings together the fundamental principles of sport science, coaching and instruction for the purpose of providing students with knowledge to enhance their own and/or others’ sporting performance.
This paper will serve as a theoretical and applied overview for individuals interested in developing their own, or others, sporting performances.
It aims to attract student athletes wanting to explore the principles and theories behind the abundance of sport related knowledge commonly touted in competitive sport settings. Students enrolled in this paper will get the opportunity to learn from UoW researchers who are working alongside worldclass sports teams, as well as experience sports science as it is practiced in the various high performance sport hubs that exists in the Waikato and BoP regions. The paper could also be appropriate for domestic students who have a passion for enhancing their own sporting performances and/or the performances of others. Such students may be permitted to enrol in the paper upon approval from the Dean of the HSHP.
This paper will serve as a theoretical and applied overview for individuals interested in developing their own, or others, sporting performances. It will be a team taught paper that will cover six key disciplines.
