Vital Union: Painting with Spaces and Places

Vital Union showcases a recent body of Whaingaroa | Raglan based artist Amanda Watson’s site-responsive painting practice.

Treating location as both collaborator and subject, Watson paints in and with the environment through a performative process, resulting in tactile works on linen, cotton and canvas that archive their own making. Often working in nature, this body of work extended her practice, and were instead created in dialogue with the geographical and architectural landscapes of the church St Peter & St Paul Edgefield, United Kingdom, a site ancestrally significant to Watson.

Her layered markings and patterns echo the spirit and textures of the spaces they emerged from, offering a visual record of place, presence, and connection
