Emergency systems tests at the University

Learn more about the emergency alert and response tests happening on campus this week.

02 Oct 2025

The University of Waikato is testing its emergency alert and response systems at its Hamilton and Tauranga campuses this week.

These tests are run every six months to ensure any issues with systems are identified and resolved for the continued safety of staff, students, and the wider University community.

Hamilton

1.30pm, Thursday 2 October

Tauranga

1.30pm, Friday 3 October

On the Hamilton campus in Hillcrest, an emergency siren will sound for three minutes.

At the Tauranga campus in the CBD, a PA announcement will be made.

At each campus, access-controlled doors will automatically lock for approximately 15 minutes while the remote lockdown system is tested. Nobody will be able to enter buildings during this time but can leave buildings if required.

Staff, students and University tenants will also receive a text message through an emergency alert system at the beginning and end of each test at the campus they are primarily enrolled or employed at.

Emergency services have been notified, and members of the public should not be alarmed if they hear the siren at the Hamilton campus.

In the event of an active emergency, updates will be provided on our website at waikato.ac.nz/emergency. We encourage our community to learn more about what to do in the case of an emergency, so they are prepared for any incident on campus.
