The New Zealand Economics Forum 2026 provides an opportunity to discuss some of the country’s most pressing socioeconomic challenges and opportunities, ahead of this year’s general election and at a pivotal moment for the country.

Proudly hosted by the University of Waikato’s Management School on 12 - 13 February, the annual forum will bring together leading economists, business leaders, and public sector officials to explore and debate the economic priorities and choices that will shape the future.

Pro Vice-Chancellor of the Waikato Management School, Jennifer Kerr, says this year’s theme of ‘big choices for a small nation’ reflects the complexity of the decisions in 2026.

Finance and Economic Growth Minister Hon Nicola Willis

“New Zealand’s economic landscape is defined by constrained resources, demographic shifts, evolving global trade and security dynamics, and deep questions about long-term fiscal sustainability,” says Ms Kerr.

“This year’s Forum offers a vital space for robust discussion and fresh perspectives on the big choices confronting politicians, policymakers, business leaders and communities.”

Finance and Economic Growth Minister Hon Nicola Willis will open the event with a much-anticipated keynote address, outlining the Government’s vision for supporting a resilient economy for all New Zealanders.

Her address will be followed by panel sessions featuring leading voices from across the economic landscape, including speakers and sessions that will explore demographic change, superannuation sustainability, the implications of major electoral reform like MMP, the impact of AI on business, education and communities, and the balance between trade interests and national security.

Day one will also feature a keynote from Hon Barbara Edmonds, Labour’s Finance Spokesperson, and an informal conversation with Rt Hon Gerry Brownlee, Speaker of the House, facilitated by geopolitical commentator Josie Pagani.

Day two will open with a keynote from Iain Rennie, Secretary and Chief Executive of the NZ Treasury, who will share insights on fiscal strategy and long-term economic stewardship.

This will be followed by panel discussions that will debate New Zealand’s NCEA curriculum, the future of the health system, and the complex trade-offs between trade and national security, including perspectives from the former Ambassador to the United States, Rosemary Banks and former Trade Minister, Hon Tim Groser.

The forum will also delve into pressing domestic policy challenges, including public health, education systems, local government reform, and the environmental choices required to achieve sustainable growth.

“The Waikato Management School is once again proud to bring together an exceptional range of speakers and experts,” says Ms Kerr.

“The forum will be two days of insightful debate, discussion and analysis, offering valuable perspectives for anyone interested in the key economic issues facing our country.”
