The University acknowledges the passing of former Chancellor Gerald Bailey, aged 84.
Gerald Bailey’s involvement with the University of Waikato began in 1987 when he joined the University Council. He held significant roles during the 11 years he sat on Council, first serving as Pro-Chancellor then as Chancellor of the University from 1992 until 1997. This was during a period of significant growth for the University.

Chancellor Gerald Bailey
With a law degree from the University of Canterbury and years spent as a practising solicitor, Gerald’s connections with the legal community were instrumental in the development of Te Piringa Faculty of Law. This development was close to his heart and he maintained contact with the faculty for many years.
As Chair of the University of Waikato Foundation he also supported the establishment of the Academy of Performing Arts (now known as the Gallagher Academy of Performing Arts) as a community venue and University resource, and was integral to fundraising efforts.
His presence on many committees and time spent representing the University at national and international events kept Waikato on a path of positive change.
The University recognised Gerald’s contributions with an Honorary Doctorate in 1999.
The University flag has been lowered to half-mast to mark Gerald’s passing, and thoughts are with his family, friends and former colleagues.
