Waikato welcome: Vice-Chancellor Professor Roy Crawford (left) and Tertiary Education Commission chair Sir Wira Gardiner.

New Tertiary Education Commission Chair Sir Wira Gardiner visited Waikato University this week to catch up with Vice-Chancellor Professor Roy Crawford about developments at the university.

Professor Crawford says although Sir Wira is new to the TEC role, it is clear he has an excellent understanding of tertiary sector issues.

“It is very evident that he has a strong commitment to ensuring that a first class education is available to future generations of New Zealanders,” Professor Crawford says.

Sir Wira was appointed to the TEC Chair in late May by Tertiary Education Minister Steven Joyce for a three-year term. Sir Wira was the founding chief executive of Te Puni Kōkiri, and more recently has been a Crown observer on the council of TeWānangao Aotearoa and chair and acting chief executive of Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi. He is also recently been commissioner at Hamilton’s Fraser High School.
