Good choice: Waikato University accounting student Ella Tappin chose to study at the University of Waikato because it has the best business school in the country.
University of Waikato student Ella Tappin decided to study at the University of Waikato because it has the best business school in the country.
The former Matamata College student came to Waikato in 2009 and is finishing her final year of a Bachelor of Management Studies majoring in accounting.
Accounting aspirations
“My Poppa was a really successful accountant and I grew up aspiring to be like him. I’d considered teaching, but I just never really changed my mind.
“I came to Waikato because the BMS was renowned as the top business degree you could get in New Zealand and because I’m not really a big city person. Waikato was always going to be the one for me.”
Heading to New York
While at university Ella has tutored accounting and also helped found the New Zealand chapter of Beta Alpha Psi, an international honorary organisation for accounting, information systems and finance students, and she will travel to New York later this year to attend the annual conference.
“We founded it as a way to get accounting students and employers together. A few of our members have landed jobs from networking, so it’s a good way to bridge the gap between university and the real world.”
Ella has landed a job at PricewaterhouseCoopers after completing two internships with the company, and she’ll begin working for them after she graduates later this year.
Information Expo
The university is holding an Information Expo at its Hamilton campus on Sunday 24 June where staff and students will be on hand to answer any questions from prospective students about qualifications, study options, entry requirements, scholarships and life at the University of Waikato.
The expo will be held in the S Block foyer between 11am-3pm and will feature stands from all faculties, sports clubs, U Leisure and the scholarships office. Student ambassadors will be taking guided tours of the university campus.
