Creative Writing journal: Mayhem Issue one, cover photograph by Paul Alsop.
The University of Waikato is launching its first journal dedicated to creative writing. The online publication has been set up to showcase work from students, staff and alumni of the university.
It’s the brain child of author and Waikato lecturer Dr Tracey Slaughter who wanted the writing of some of her students to reach a wider audience.
“I teach a number of writing papers, and have been blown away by some of the work that turns up week after week in a variety of genres,” says Dr Slaughter. “So this first issue includes a dynamic selection of poetry, fiction and creative non-fiction, mostly from writing studies students, but some staff have surprised me with submissions as well.”
A group of Dr Slaughter’s senior students worked with her on the selection and editing of the new online book, which is called Mayhem.
Official public launch
Mayhem Issue One will have its official public launch at the university on Thursday March 13 at 5.00pm on the fourth floor of the University library (Tearoom 4.21).
Dr Slaughter says the evening will feature live performances from some of the contributors and she’s hopeful that Mayhem will be published twice a year from now on.
