Hamilton Police say CCTV footage supplied by the University was a key factor in the arrest of an 18-year-old Hamilton man following an attack on a young woman on campus on August 23.
Hamilton Police Detective Senior Sergeant Ross Patterson says police were relieved to have been able to make an identification of a man who appeared in the Hamilton District Court on September 20, and has been remanded in custody.
“CCTV footage provided by Waikato University played a crucial role in assisting police identify this person,” he says.
Footage from multiple cameras was supplied to police before the identification was made.
Head of FMD John Cameron says this was a random attack and a rare event on the campus.
Safety is a top priority
“We’re very happy to have been able to provide police with the footage that led to the arrest of this man. Safety on campus is one of the University’s top priorities.
“Good reporting of incidences from staff and students has, in the past, helped prevent property thefts, and we have a lot of different mechanisms for keeping people safe.”
