Ready to play: The Waikato Juniors step onto the rugby field ready to compete for a place in the semi-finals.

The University-sponsored Waikato Under 19 rugby side take on Otago on Sunday in the inaugural National Under 19s competition in Taupo.

Waikato Juniors in the top four

The team, known as Waikato Juniors, play Otago at 5.05pm on Sunday at Owen Delany Park ahead of further tournament days on Wednesday and next weekend.

Waikato qualified for the Jock Hobbs Memorial National U19 Tournament as one of the top four seeds thanks to earlier wins over Bay of Plenty, Counties Manukau, North Harbour, Taranaki and a Harlequins Under 19 side.

Team competing for semi-finals spot

The side contains three Hillary scholars in captain Mitchell Jacobson, fellow loose forward Mungo Mason and prop Atu Moli along with three other students, Tau Koloamatangi, Josh Dowsing and Te Raina Richards-Coxhead, who also play for the University club.

A win against Otago would see them into the semi-finals while a loss would relegate them to into the second-four playoffs.

Otago finished second to Canterbury in the Southern qualifying round-robin.
